Accredited Drug Testing offers thorough hair follicle drug testing services in Pickett, Wisconsin. Whether you require a hair drug or alcohol examination, our expertise lies in hair testing, with facilities in cities across the nation ready to conduct these tests. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body hair is necessary. Hair tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be tailored for various testing needs.

Lately, the approach to drug testing has increasingly involved hair follicle drug tests. Many employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse experts are opting for hair tests over traditional urine tests. Employers with strict no-drug policies, legal entities, and those on probation use these tests. The main advantage is their extended detection of drug use for up to 90 days, collected under supervision, making it nearly unhackable. However, for drug use within the last 5 days, urine tests remain the most dependable.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has emerged as a potent method for detecting the use of drugs and alcohol. Hair serves as an archive of alcohol and drug consumption by capturing biomarkers within the fibers of developing hair strands. When obtained near the scalp, hair can reveal a detection timeframe for alcohol and drugs of up to approximately three months. Hair collection is uncomplicated, relatively resistant to tampering, and straightforward to transport.

A 1.5-inch sample comprising approximately 200 hair strands (comparable to the thickness of a #2 pencil) close to the scalp provides 100mg of hair, the optimal sample size for both screening and confirmation stages. For EtG, additional tests, and/or examinations beyond 10 panels, a 150mg sample is preferable. Using a jeweler’s scale is suggested for weighing the specimen. Should scalp hair be inaccessible, an equivalent quantity of body hair is acceptable. By head hair, we specifically refer to scalp hair. All other hair types (such as facial and axillary hair) fall under the category of body hair.

Process Overview

The process of acquiring drug test results in a lab comprises four major steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial stage that integrates a sample into the laboratory system. It involves verifying the sample's seal and shipping status, allotting a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and supplementing any missing data not supplied by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening provides an initial cursory assessment for drugs of abuse. While it’s a cost-efficient technique for ruling out drug use in most samples, a positive result in Screening mandates confirmation to be eligible for court presentation. Samples deemed presumptively positive in Screening require secondary confirmation.

If a Screening test indicates positivity, additional hair is extracted from the original sample and processed for Extraction. Here, drugs are derived from hair at significantly lower concentrations compared to other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), giving hair drug screening its reputation as one of the more challenging methodologies to execute.

Confirmation of any positive findings in Screening is executed through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples with presumptive positive results undergo washing before confirmation if necessary. The entire lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated in adherence to both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and compliance with ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Long detection period: Hair drug tests can trace drug usage for as long as 90 days, unlike urine tests that offer a more limited detection period.
  • Difficulty in falsification: Cheating a hair drug test is very challenging, enhancing the accuracy of results.
  • Reveals use history: It sheds light on drug use patterns over time, not just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Cannot trace recent use: Detection of drugs in hair takes about 5-7 days post-consumption.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests tend to be pricier than alternative drug testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Hair color and personal hair growth variables can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Although often termed as "hair follicle tests," the evaluation is performed on the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
