Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Pigeon, Wisconsin. If you're in need of a hair drug or alcohol screening, our expertise lies in hair testing with centers nationwide ready to carry out these tests. Generally, a sample from 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your head or body is required. The tests can screen for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other specific testing setups.

In recent times, the inclination towards conducting drug tests via hair follicle testing has increased. Many organizations, legal systems, and substance misuse experts now prefer hair drug screening over traditional urine tests. This method is favored by employers with strict no-drug policies, judicial courts, and probation officers. The key advantage lies in its extended detection span for drug usage, which can stretch up to 90 days, is collected under supervision, and is nearly cheat-proof. Nonetheless, urine tests remain precise for identifying drug use in the immediate past 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair assessments have gained recognition as an effective means for identifying substance and alcohol consumption. Hair offers a prolonged record of alcohol and other substances by capturing biomarkers within the strands as they develop. When taken near the scalp, hair can reveal a detection period of up to approximately three months for alcohol and other substances. Hair is straightforward to gather, challenging to tamper with, and convenient to send.

A sample of 1.5 inches containing roughly 200 strands of hair (similar in size to a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp provides 100mg of hair, which is the ideal sample for analysis and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or those exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg sample is advised. We suggest utilizing a jeweler’s scale for weighing the sample. If scalp hair is not present, a similar quantity of body hair may be used. When mentioning head hair, we refer specifically to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other types of hair (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result encompasses four key phases: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves the initial integration of a sample into a lab’s system. This step ensures the sample was correctly sealed and dispatched, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any supplementary data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening involves a preliminary check for substances of abuse. Though Screening offers a cost-efficient method to dismiss drug usage in most samples, a positive screen must be confirmed for court validity. Samples that suggest positive results in Screening require a follow-up confirmation.

If a sample indicates a presumptively positive result during the Screening stage, additional hair is taken from the original specimen and readied for Extraction. In this phase, substances are extracted from hair at reduced concentrations than in alternative methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), thus making hair drug screening the most intricate method to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening result is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Presumptive positive samples undergo washing before confirmation where necessary. From Accessioning to Confirmation, the entire laboratory process is scrutinized under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can reveal substance use for up to 90 days, in contrast to urine tests which offer a narrower detection window.
  • Hard to falsify: Cheating on a hair drug test is extremely difficult, enhancing the reliability of results.
  • Supplies historical context: It offers a pattern of substance use over a duration, not merely recent use.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent usage: It takes roughly 5-7 days for substances to appear in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are typically more costly than alternative drug testing methods.
  • Result variability: Elements such as hair color and individual differences in hair growth can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Frequently called "hair follicle tests", the analysis actually examines the hair strand, not the scalp's underlying hair follicle.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Pigeon, WI, hair follicle tests surpass traditional urine tests due to their longevity of detection, tracing substance use over months rather than days. Their reliability makes them highly favored among employers, courts, and substance abuse counselors. Unlike urine samples, which can vary widely in substance visibility, hair tests provide consistent and reliable results, eliminating false negatives and ensuring comprehensive substance history insights.

Extended Detection Window

Extended Detection Window in Pigeon, WI

One of the standout benefits of hair follicle testing is its ability to detect drug use over a substantially extended timeframe, reaching up to 90 days. This characteristic provides employers with a deeper insight into an individual's history of substance use, facilitating better-informed decisions when assessing potential or current employees' behavioral patterns and adherence to policies.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method in Pigeon, WI

Hair follicle testing significantly reduces the likelihood of sample meddling, providing assurance of unmodified and unquestionable results. Unlike urine tests, which can be altered or tampered with, hair tests maintain their integrity throughout the process, offering an untampered examination method that reliably represents a person's drug-use history.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
