Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Pittsville, Wisconsin. Whether you require a drug or alcohol test via hair samples, our expertise in hair testing is accessible nationwide, with testing centers across all states ready to conduct these tests. Typically, hair from the crown or body, measuring 1.5 to 2 inches, is utilized. Options are available for testing drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other bespoke hair testing needs.

Recently, hair follicle drug testing has become increasingly popular for drug screening. It is now often preferred by employers, legal systems, and Substance Abuse experts, surpassing the conventional urine tests. Hair follicle tests support strict no-drug policies, ideal for workplace and legal settings. They offer a prolonged detection period of up to 90 days, are supervised during collection, and are almost impossible to cheat. However, urine tests remain the most precise for recent drug use, within five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is recognized as a robust method for detecting drug and alcohol usage. Hair retains a long-term record of alcohol and other drugs by embedding biomarkers within the strands of the growing hair. When collected directly from the scalp, hair samples can offer a detection period of up to about 3 months for both alcohol and other substances. Hair collection is straightforward, moderately challenging to tamper with, and convenient for transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches, consisting of roughly 200 hair strands (similar in size to a #2 pencil) from the scalp provides 100mg of hair, which is the optimal sample for screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, or tests exceeding 10 panels, it is advised to have 150mg of the specimen. We suggest using a jeweler's scale to measure the specimen's weight. If scalp hair is unavailable, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be obtained. It should be noted that when referencing head hair, we mean scalp hair exclusively. Body hair includes all other types of hair (such as facial or axillary).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result includes four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial phase where a sample is incorporated into a lab's system. This step involves confirming that the sample was properly sealed and transported, attributing a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any outstanding data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is an initial rapid assessment for the presence of drugs. Although Screening economically rules out drug use for most samples, a positive screen requires confirmation for legal acceptability. All samples that appear positive in Screening necessitate a secondary confirmation.

Should a sample show a presumptive positive in the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample and readied for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are extracted from hair but at a much lesser concentration than in other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), making hair drug testing the most challenging methodology to execute.

Any positive result from the screening is confirmed via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Presumptive positive samples are washed before confirmation, if needed. The entire lab process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is evaluated under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair standard and the ISO / IEC 17025 criteria.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can indicate drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a much shorter period.
  • Difficulty to falsify: It is extremely challenging to falsify results from a hair drug test, enhancing accuracy.
  • Tracks historical usage: It reveals a drug use pattern over time, not merely recent use.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent usage: Drugs only become detectable in hair approximately 5-7 days post-consumption.
  • Expense: Generally, hair drug tests cost more than other methods.
  • Result variations: Factors such as hair pigmentation and individual differences in hair growth can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Although often termed as "hair follicle tests," the analysis is conducted on the hair strand itself, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Pittsville, WI, hair follicle testing outperforms urine testing in numerous aspects. The detection window for hair tests is substantially longer, making them a preferred choice for employers.

Hair tests provide superior accuracy, with a detection window of up to 90 days, whereas urine tests are limited to short-term detection.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
