Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug tests in Plain, Wisconsin. Specializing in hair and alcohol testing, we have locations in every city nationwide. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of head or body hair is required. Our hair tests analyze drugs, alcohol/ETG, and provide various testing options.

Hair follicle drug tests have become more prevalent for drug testing in recent times. Many employers, courts, and substance abuse professionals prefer hair tests to traditional urine tests. Employers with zero-tolerance policies, courts, and probation services widely use them. Hair follicle tests offer a detection window of up to 90 days, are observed during collection, and are hard to manipulate. However, urine tests remain accurate for detecting recent drug use within five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is now regarded as a potent method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures long-term alcohol and drug data by embedding biomarkers in its growing strands. When sampled near the scalp, hair can reveal a detection period of up to about 3 months for alcohol and drugs. Collecting hair is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches with roughly 200 hair strands (approximately the size of a #2 pencil) from the scalp yields 100mg of hair, ideal for both screening and confirmation tests. For EtG, additional analyses, and tests beyond 10 panels, 150mg of hair is advisable. It is suggested to use a jeweler’s scale to weigh the specimen. Should scalp hair be lacking, a similar quantity of body hair can be collected. Head hair refers exclusively to scalp hair, while body hair encompasses all other hair types (such as facial and axillary).

Process Overview

There are four essential steps in the lab processing of drug test samples: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves registering a sample in the lab’s systems. This step ensures the sample was sealed and transported correctly, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and handles any extra data entry that an electronic chain of custody system didn’t capture.

Screening performs an initial quick assessment for drug involvement. While it's an economical approach to dismiss drug use for most samples, a positive result requires confirmation to be court-admissible. Any samples preliminarily positive in Screening necessitate further confirmation.

For samples deemed preliminarily positive in Screening, additional hair is taken from the original sample and readied for Extraction. In this phase, drug content is separated from hair at much lower concentrations than other approaches (e.g., urine or saliva), which is why hair drug analysis is notably challenging.

Confirmation of any positive screening findings is conducted using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques. All indicative positive samples are cleansed before confirmation as needed. From Accessioning to Confirmation, the entire labs process is audited under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and with certification to ISO / IEC 17025 requirements.

Benefits of hair drug analysis:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests offer up to a 90-day drug-use detection window, unlike urine tests that cover a shorter duration.
  • Hard to manipulate: Manipulating hair drug test outcomes is highly challenging, ensuring greater accuracy.
  • Historical trend data: These tests reveal drug usage patterns over time, not just recent consumption.

Challenges:

  • Recent use detection: Drugs typically take 5-7 days to manifest in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are usually costlier than alternative drug-testing methods.
  • Result fluctuations: Elements like hair color and personal hair growth differences can impact drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Although commonly termed "hair follicle tests", the analysis focuses on the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Plain, WI, the benefits of hair follicle testing over traditional urine tests are significant. Hair tests provide superior detection accuracy with a longer window of drug use tracking. Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
