In Post Lake, Wisconsin, Accredited Drug Testing provides thorough hair follicle drug testing. Whether you require a drug or alcohol hair test, our expertise lies in hair analysis, with facilities available in cities across the nation. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown of the head or body is used. These tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored options.

Recently, drug testing more often involves hair follicle analysis. It's preferred by employers, courts, and Substance Abuse experts over traditional urine exams. Employers with no drug use policies, legal systems, and probation clients use these tests. Hair follicle tests offer extended detection periods, often up to 90 days, are conducted under observation, and are nearly impossible to tamper with. However, for detecting recent usage within the last 5 days, urine tests remain the most precise.

What it is, How it works

The perception of hair testing as an effective means for identifying drug and alcohol use has grown. Hair captures a prolonged history of substance use by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the hair strand as it grows. Collected near the scalp, such samples can offer up to a three-month detection period for alcohol and drugs. Collecting hair is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and easy to send off for testing.

A segment of 1.5 inches comprising around 200 strands (roughly the size of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp results in 100mg of hair, which is the ideal sample for assessment and validation. For EtG, additional tests, or panels beyond 10, a 150mg sample is advisable. It is suggested to measure the sample on a jeweler's scale. If no scalp hair is available, an equivalent amount of body hair may be used. References to head hair pertain solely to scalp hair, whereas body hair includes all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The main four stages involved in lab processing of drug test results include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning encompasses the initial intake of a sample into the laboratory system, ensuring that it was sealed and shipped correctly, assigning it a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and entering any additional data not received electronically.

Screening is a preliminary check for drug abuse. Though cost-effective for excluding drug usage in most samples, a positive result at this stage must be confirmed for legal acceptability. Any samples with a presumptive positive result in Screening require a subsequent confirmation.

For samples deemed presumptively positive in Screening, additional hair from the original sample is taken for Extraction. This stage extracts drugs from hair at much lower concentrations than with other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening particularly challenging.

Confirmation of any positive screening outcome is achieved through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Samples with presumptive positives are washed, as necessary, before confirmation. The complete lab process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is assessed according to both CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and conformance to ISO / IEC 17025 benchmarks.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection timeframe: Hair drug tests can detect usage for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which provide a shorter window.
  • Low potential for manipulation: Cheating on a hair drug test is challenging, enhancing result reliability.
  • Historical pattern insight: Offers insight into drug usage patterns over time, not just recent incidents.

Limitations:

  • No detection of recent usage: Drugs become detectable in hair after around 5-7 days.
  • Cost considerations: Hair tests usually incur higher costs compared to other testing methods.
  • Result variability: Factors such as hair color and individual hair growth rates can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Despite being commonly known as "hair follicle tests," these tests analyze the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
