Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug examinations in Potter Lake, Wisconsin. Whether you require a hair drug or alcohol assessment, Accredited Drug Testing excels in hair evaluations, featuring testing sites across all cities in the nation that are equipped to execute hair testing. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the scalp or body is necessary. Hair tests can check for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored hair testing configurations.

Recently, drug testing protocols have increasingly involved hair follicle drug evaluation. Numerous employers, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse experts now mandate hair drug tests rather than conventional urine tests. Employers endorsing strict drug-free policies, legal bodies, and those on probation often utilize hair follicle drug assessments. A prominent advantage of a hair follicle drug assessment is its extended detection duration for substance use, usually up to three months, collected in a monitored procedure, and is virtually unachievable to falsify. Nonetheless, for substance detection within the last five days, urine evaluations remain the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is now recognized as an effective means for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures long-term indicators of substances by embedding them in the hair's structure as it grows. When cut near the scalp, hair can reveal drug and alcohol intake history for up to a 90-day period. It is straightforward to collect, challenging to tamper with, and convenient for transport.

Collecting a 1.5-inch section of about 200 hairs (similar to the width of a #2 pencil) close to the scalp will yield 100mg, which is sufficient for testing and verification. For EtG, additional analyses, and tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of hair is advised. It is suggested to measure the sample using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is not an option, a similar quantity of body hair may be used. By head hair, we only mean scalp hair. Body hair includes other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The primary steps in lab processing for a drug test result are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning handles the initial integration of a sample into a lab's system. This process includes confirming the sample's proper seal and shipment, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any extra data entry not available from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a preliminary evaluation for substances of abuse. Although Screening is an economical approach to exclude drug use in most samples, findings must be verified to be legally valid. Samples that test presumptively positive in the Screening phase require a follow-up confirmation.

If a sample tests positive during Screening, additional hair is taken for Extraction. Here, drugs are isolated from the hair at a lower concentration than with other methods (e.g., urine or saliva), necessitating that hair drug testing is the most challenging method to execute.

Confirmation of any positive result from screening is achieved using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques. All presumptive positive samples are cleansed before final evaluation if necessary. The end-to-end lab process from Accessioning through Confirmation is audited as per both CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair standards and the ISO / IEC 17025 certification.

Benefits of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair testing can reveal drug use up to 3 months back, unlike shorter windows of urine testing.
  • Difficult to tamper: It's extremely challenging to alter a hair drug test, leading to more reliable outcomes.
  • Reveals usage patterns: It showcases drug use trends over time, beyond just recent activities.

Disadvantages:

  • Cannot catch recent drug use: Drugs require about a week to become traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair tests tend to be pricier compared to alternative drug testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Aspects like hair color and individual hair growth differences might influence metabolite concentrations.

Note: Commonly called "hair follicle tests", the analysis focuses on the hair strand rather than the scalp's hair follicle.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
