Accredited Drug Testing offers thorough hair follicle drug tests in Poynette, Wisconsin. When you require testing for drugs or alcohol via hair samples, we specialize in these analyses and operate centers across the nation, including a hair testing facility in each city. Typically, hair at the crown must be 1.5 to 2 inches for testing, though body hair can suffice. Our tests detect drugs, ETG/alcohol, or can be customized to suit your testing needs.

In recent times, hair follicle drug tests have become more favored in drug testing procedures. Employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse counselors often mandate a hair test over a urine test. Organizations with zero-tolerance policies use hair tests, as do court systems and probationary supervisors. The biggest advantage of hair tests is their ability to show drug use over an extended period, up to 90 days, as they are closely monitored and hard to alter. However, for detecting recent drug use within five days, urine tests remain more precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is increasingly recognized as a powerful means for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers a lengthy historical record of substance intake by retaining biomarkers within its fibers. When taken close to the scalp, hair can offer a detection window of up to about 3 months for alcohol and other substances. Hair collection is straightforward, somewhat challenging to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch sample comprised of roughly 200 hair strands (similar in size to a #2 pencil) near the scalp yields 100mg of hair, making it the preferred sample size for screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional testing, and/or analyses exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of hair is advised. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale to measure the sample weight. If scalp hair is not accessible, an equivalent quantity of body hair may be obtained. When mentioning head hair, we exclusively mean scalp hair. Body hair includes all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result involves four key steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning pertains to the initial handling of a sample within a laboratory’s system. This step includes ensuring the sample was properly sealed and dispatched, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any supplementary data input not available through an electronic chain of custody mechanism.

Screening entails an initial rapid assessment for drug abuse. While Screening is an economical method to exclude drug use in most samples, a positive result requires confirmation to be legally valid. Any samples with a presumptive positive in Screening require a follow-up confirmation.

If the Screening stage reveals a presumptive positive, additional hair is extracted from the original sample for the Extraction process. During this process, drugs are extracted from hair at a lower concentration compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), contributing to the challenges of hair drug screening.

Confirmation of any positive screening outcomes is executed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples with a presumptive positive are cleansed prior to confirmation if required. The entire processing chain from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug usage for up to 90 days, compared to urine tests which have a shorter detection timeframe.
  • Hard to deceive: Manipulating a hair drug test is quite challenging, boosting result accuracy.
  • Supplies historical insights: It detects a drug use pattern over time, not just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Unable to spot recent intake: It takes about 5-7 days for substances to appear in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are usually pricier than alternative testing methods.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair color and personal hair growth differences can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Although sometimes termed "hair follicle tests", the analysis is conducted on the hair strand and not the hair follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
