Accredited Drug Testing offers outstanding hair follicle drug testing services in Princeton, Wisconsin. Whether you're in need of a hair drug or alcohol screening, our centers, located all across the country, specialize in hair testing. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body is necessary. These tests can check for drugs, alcohol/ETG, alongside other custom hair testing choices.

Hair follicle drug testing has become increasingly popular over recent years as a method for drug screening. Employers, courts, and substance abuse counselors now prefer it over urine tests. This test is favored by employers upholding strict no-drug policies and probation officers. The key advantage is its longer detection window, usually 90 days. It involves a supervised collection, making it hard to tamper with, though urine tests remain best for recent drug use, within about 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has increasingly become recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. The hair's structure captures biomarkers as the strand grows, offering an extended timeline for detecting substance use. When samples are taken near the scalp, the detection period for drugs and alcohol extends up to roughly 90 days. Hair sample collection is straightforward, relatively tamper-resistant, and effortless to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment containing roughly 200 hair strands (approximately the width of a #2 pencil) cut closest to the scalp yields 100mg, the preferred sample size for both preliminary tests and confirmatory analysis. To test for EtG, additional substances, or when requesting more than 10 panels, a 150mg sample is advisable. We advise using a jeweler’s scale for measuring the specimen's weight. Should scalp hair be absent, a similar quantity of body hair can be obtained. The term "head hair" refers solely to scalp hair, whereas "body hair" includes all other types (such as facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory drug testing process involves four key stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

During Accessioning, the sample is initially processed into the laboratory’s system. This step ensures the sample was sealed and transported correctly, assigns it a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any required data entry absent in electronic chain of custody records.

Screening is designed for a rapid assessment of potential drug misuse. While cost-efficient for eliminating drug use in most samples, any positive Screening outcome necessitates a further confirmation to be legally valid. Samples showing a presumptive positive result in Screening must undergo secondary confirmation.

If Screening indicates a presumptive positive, additional hair from the initial specimen is prepared for Extraction. Drugs are then isolated from hair at significantly lower concentrations than other methods (such as urine or saliva testing), underscoring the complexity of hair drug analysis.

Confirmation of any positive results from Screening is conducted using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Samples that are presumptively positive undergo washing before confirmation as needed. The entire transition from Accessioning to Confirmation within the laboratory adheres to both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair standard and ISO/IEC 17025 accreditation requirements.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair tests identify drug use for as long as 90 days, unlike urine tests which offer a shorter window.
  • Resistance to tampering: Cheating a hair drug test is extremely difficult, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Historical usage pattern: Provides a record of drug consumption over time, not just recent activities.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: Drugs become detectable in hair around 5-7 days after use.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing typically costs more than alternative testing methods.
  • Result variability: Changes in hair color and individual growth rates can alter drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Although commonly called "hair follicle tests", the analysis actually examines the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
