Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug screening in Randolph, Wisconsin. Whether your requirement is a hair drug or alcohol test, Accredited Drug Testing excels in hair analysis with testing facilities available in numerous cities Nationwide. Typically, you'll need 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your head, but body hair can also be tested in certain instances. Hair screens can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or can be tailored to specific testing needs.

In the last few years, hair follicle drug testing has become a more common method in drug screenings. A growing number of employers, courts, and Substance Abuse professionals are opting for hair drug tests over traditional urine tests. This testing method is favored by employers with strict drug use policies, judicial systems, and probationary programs. The primary advantage of a hair follicle drug test is its extended detection window for drug use, which can reach up to 90 days. It is collected under supervision and is notably difficult to tamper with. However, for detecting drug usage within the past five days, urine tests remain the most reliable.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has emerged as an effective means of identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a detailed record of alcohol and drug intake by embedding biomarkers within the hair strands as they grow. When sourced near the scalp, hair can offer a detection span of up to roughly three months for both alcohol and drugs. The collection process is straightforward, it's challenging to tamper with, and shipping is hassle-free.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches, comprising roughly 200 hair strands (akin to the thickness of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp, furnishes 100mg of hair—an ideal quantity for screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional panels, or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the specimen is advised. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale for weighing the specimen. Should scalp hair be unavailable, an equivalent volume of body hair is acceptable. "Head hair" pertains only to scalp hair, while "body hair" encompasses all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory process for a drug test comprises four primary stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning marks the initial step, where a sample is processed into the laboratory’s system. This phase involves confirming that the sample was properly sealed and shipped, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and filling in any missing data not captured by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening provides an initial, rapid evaluation for potential drug abuse. Although Screening is a budget-friendly method to eliminate drug use in most samples, any positive result requires Confirmation for validation in legal settings. Any samples indicating a presumptive positive during Screening necessitate further Confirmation.

For samples showing a presumptive positive in the Screening stage, additional hair is taken from the original specimen and prepared for Extraction. During Extraction, drugs are drawn from hair at a significantly lower concentration than in other testing methods (such as urine or oral fluids), rendering hair drug screening the most challenging technique to execute.

The Confirmation of any positive screening outcome employs GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS techniques. All presumptive positive samples are cleaned prior to Confirmation as essential. The entire laboratory process, spanning from Accessioning to Confirmation, is evaluated under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 accredited standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, contrasting with urine tests, which have a shorter detection span.
  • Difficult to manipulate: Cheating a hair drug test is notably challenging, enhancing the reliability of the results.
  • Chronological data: It can reveal a drug use pattern over time, not solely recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting recent use: Drugs take approximately 5-7 days to become traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are typically pricier than other drug testing alternatives.
  • Result variations: Elements like hair color and individual differences in hair growth can influence the drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Though frequently termed "hair follicle tests", the actual examination evaluates the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing in Randolph, WI

When comparing hair testing to traditional urine testing, hair tests win with a broader detection window of up to 90 days versus mere days for urine analysis. The longer detection period provides employers and courts a more granular view of an individual's drug use history. Additionally, hair testing is difficult to cheat, unlike urine tests, which can often be manipulated.

Hair testing is not only harder to adulterate but also more accurate, providing consistent results where urine tests may falter. The precision in hair testing is vital for zero-tolerance policies, ensuring accuracy in results and reliability in reports, unlike urine tests where substances could be missed or results contested due to tampering.

Extended Detection Window

Extended Detection Window in Randolph, WI

Hair follicle testing is advantageous due to its ability to detect drug use over an extended period, often up to 90 days. This long detection window delivers a broader view of an individual's substance use, helping employers and professionals assess potential risks more thoroughly. The captured timeline of use is essential for comprehensive evaluations and informed decision-making.

This extended window also translates to better long-term monitoring of individuals undergoing recovery or probation, ensuring sustained compliance with rehabilitation programs. For employers, this means a more significant insight into employee behavior, supporting safer and drug-free workplaces in Randolph, WI.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method in Randolph, WI

Hair follicle tests offer a significant advantage by reducing the risk of sample adulteration. Tampering with hair samples is much harder compared to urine samples, which are often susceptible to manipulation. This resistance to tampering ensures the integrity of results, providing a reliable measure of substance use history.

By utilizing hair follicle testing, organizations and legal authorities can trust in the authenticity of laboratory findings. This trust is critical in scenarios where accurate and untampered results are necessary, particularly when linked to employment compliance or legal proceedings.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
