Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Ridgeland, Wisconsin. For those in need of a hair drug or alcohol analysis, Accredited Drug Testing is an expert in this field with facilities in cities across the nation capable of performing these tests. A minimum of 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body usually suffices. These hair tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored options.

Recently, hair follicle drug testing has become increasingly prevalent in drug screening. Employers, judicial entities, and substance abuse professionals are often preferring hair tests over urine tests. This method is particularly favored by employers with strict no-drug policies, the legal system, and those on probation. One of its key advantages is detecting drug use for up to 90 days, collected in an observed process, making it nearly foolproof, but urine tests remain more effective for substance use detection within the past 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is widely recognized as an effective method for detecting drug and alcohol usage. Hair captures a historical timeline of alcohol and drug consumption by storing biomarkers within its growing fibers. When sampled close to the scalp, hair can offer a detection timeframe of up to roughly 3 months for alcohol and drugs. Hair is straightforward to collect, relatively hard to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A hair specimen measuring 1.5 inches comprising about 200 strands (roughly equivalent to the thickness of a #2 pencil) near the scalp provides 100mg of hair, which is the preferred sample size for screening and confirmation. For EtG, add-ons, and/or tests over 10 panels, it is advised to gather 150mg of the specimen. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale for weighing the sample. If scalp hair cannot be collected, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be used. "Head hair" specifically means scalp hair, while "body hair" includes all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result consists of four main stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial stage where a sample is integrated into a laboratory’s system. This step involves confirming the sample was sealed and shipped correctly, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any extra data entry not provided by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a preliminary check for drugs of abuse. While it is a cost-effective method to rule out drug usage in most samples, a positive result from Screening must be confirmed to be legally admissible. Any samples with presumptive positive results in Screening require secondary confirmation.

In cases where a sample tests presumptively positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the sample for further processing in the Extraction phase. In this phase, drugs are isolated from hair at much lower concentrations compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most challenging methodology.

Confirmation of any positive screening result is carried out via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples indicated as presumptive positive undergo a washing process before confirmation if needed. The comprehensive laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is examined under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and complies with ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a shorter detection period.
  • Challenge to deceive: It is very challenging to tamper with a hair drug test, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Provides usage trends: It can reveal a pattern of drug consumption over time, not just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Cannot identify recent consumption: Approximately 5-7 days are necessary for drugs to be identifiable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically cost more than other drug testing techniques.
  • Variability in results: Factors like hair color and individual hair growth rates can impact the concentration of drug metabolites in hair.

Note: Despite often being called "hair follicle tests," the test specifically examines the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
