Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing in Ridgeville, Wisconsin. For those in need of a drug or alcohol hair analysis, we are dedicated to hair testing, with facilities across all U.S. cities ready to conduct a hair examination. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of head or body hair is required. Hair analyses can cover drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other tailored testing solutions.

Over the past years, hair follicle testing has become a more prevalent method for drug assessments. It is increasingly utilized by employers, legal entities, and substance abuse specialists, favoring this over conventional urine tests. Hair follicle examinations suit employers with strict no-drug policies, judicial systems, and probation monitoring. The standout advantage is its extended drug-use detection span, reaching up to 90 days, gathered under supervision, and difficult to manipulate, while urine tests remain precise for detecting the five most recent days.

What it is, How it works

Hair sampling is recognized as an effective approach for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a long-term record of alcohol and drugs by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the growing hair shaft. By collecting hair near the scalp, a detection range of up to about 3 months for alcohol and drugs can be achieved. Hair collection is straightforward, relatively hard to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches with roughly 200 hair strands (nearly the width of a #2 pencil) near the scalp will yield 100mg, which is ideal for screening and confirmation procedures. For EtG, add-ons, or tests beyond 10 panels, a 150mg sample is preferred. We advise using a jeweler’s scale to weigh the sample. If scalp hair cannot be obtained, a comparable amount of body hair is permissible. When mentioning head hair, we mean scalp hair specifically. Body hair pertains to all other types of hair (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory handling of drug test results encompasses four core stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning marks the preliminary integration of a sample into a lab’s framework. Verifying the proper sealing and shipment of the sample, allocating a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and addressing any extra data entry not provided by an electronic chain of custody system are part of this stage.

Screening provides a primary check for drugs of abuse. While Screening is a cost-efficient method to eliminate drug use on most samples, a positive screening necessitates confirmation for court admissibility. Samples testing presumptively positive during Screening require additional confirmation.

If presumptive positivity is observed during the Screening phase, extra hair is extracted from the original sample and readied for Extraction. Here, drugs are removed from hair at significantly lower levels than other methods (ex. urine or oral fluid), which is why hair drug screening is one of the most challenging techniques to perform.

GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS is used to confirm any positive screening results. Presumptively positive samples undergo washing before confirmation, if needed. Every step from Accessioning to Confirmation is audited under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO/IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests that offer a shorter detection span.
  • Challenging to manipulate: Hair drug tests are tough to alter, ensuring more reliable results.
  • Delivers chronological data: It provides a historical usage pattern instead of just recent use.

Limitations:

  • Unable to detect recent use: Drugs take about 5-7 days to become visible in hair tests.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests tend to cost more compared to other testing methods.
  • Result variability: Differences like hair color and personal hair growth patterns can influence drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Though termed "hair follicle tests", the test actually evaluates the hair strand, not the follicle underneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
