Offering comprehensive hair follicle drug tests in Rome, Wisconsin, Accredited Drug Testing is your go-to for hair drug or alcohol assessments. We excel in hair testing, providing services in cities across the country. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body suffices for evaluation. Drugs, alcohol/ETG, or customized analytes can be identified through hair analysis.

Lately, drug testing protocols have increasingly featured hair follicle tests. They’re favored by employers, the judicial system, and Substance Abuse specialists over traditional urine analyses. Enterprises enforcing no-drug policies, courts, and probation officers prefer hair tests due to their prolonged detection window, which spans up to 90 days, an observed collection process, and their resistance to tampering. Meanwhile, urine tests remain the preferred choice for detecting very recent drug consumption within 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as an effective method for identifying the usage of drugs and alcohol. Hair encapsulates a prolonged history of substance use by embedding biomarkers within the growing strands. When hair is taken near the scalp, it offers a detection period of up to three months for drugs and alcohol. Hair collection is straightforward, relatively tamper-proof, and simple to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches consisting of approximately 200 strands (the approximate thickness of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is optimal for screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, or panels exceeding 10, a 150mg sample is preferred. It's advisable to measure the sample using a jeweler’s scale. In the absence of scalp hair, an equivalent amount of body hair may be used. When we mention head hair, it specifically refers to scalp hair. In contrast, body hair includes all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The core stages in laboratory processing for a drug test result entail Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the preliminary step of incorporating a sample into a laboratory’s system. This process ensures the sample was correctly sealed and shipped, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any remaining data entry not handled by an electronic chain of custody.

Screening serves as an initial rapid assessment for drug substances. Although Screening is cost-efficient for excluding drug use in most samples, positive results necessitate confirmation for legal acceptability. Samples showing presumptive positives during Screening require further validation.

Should a sample test presumptively positive during Screening, additional hair from the initial batch is extracted for further testing. The Extraction stage involves isolating drugs from hair at concentrations significantly lower than those found in urine or saliva tests, which accounts for the complexity of hair drug testing.

Confirmation of positive Screening results is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS technologies. Presumptive positive samples undergo washing before confirmation as needed. The complete lab procedure from Accessioning through Confirmation is inspected according to CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation alongside ISO/IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests reveal drug use up to 90 days back, unlike urine tests with shorter detection periods.
  • Hard to manipulate: Cheating on a hair drug test is notably difficult, lending greater validity to the results.
  • Offers historical insight: Capable of showing a pattern of drug use over time, beyond immediate use.

Limitations:

  • Limited to detecting older use: It takes about a week for drugs to be traceable in hair samples.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing usually incurs higher costs than other testing methods.
  • Result variability: Variables such as hair color and individual hair growth rates can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Despite being called "hair follicle tests", the analysis focuses on the hair strand, excluding the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
