In Rosendale, Wisconsin, Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair drug testing solutions. Should you need a test for drugs or alcohol, their expertise is in hair analysis, with facilities available nationwide, including all cities, to carry out these tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body suffices. Tests encompass drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored options.

The preference for hair follicle drug testing has surged recently, becoming the choice for many employers, courts, and substance abuse experts, over typical urine tests. This method is favored by those with strict drug policies, judicial systems, and probation cases. Hair testing's main advantage lies in its extensive detection scope, covering up to 90 days, with an observed collection preventing cheating. Yet, urine tests excel for identifying drug use within the last five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as an effective resource for uncovering drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a prolonged record of substances by locking in biomarkers within the fibers of the hair as it grows. When obtained near the scalp area, hair can reveal a detection period of up to roughly three months for alcohol and drugs. Collecting hair is straightforward, somewhat challenging to tamper with, and convenient for shipping.

A sample of hair 1.5 inches long and around 200 strands thick (comparable to a #2 pencil) taken nearest the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, the optimal quantity for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or screenings beyond 10 panels, a specimen of 150mg is suggested. We advise measuring the specimen using a jeweler’s scale. Should scalp hair be missing, an equivalent portion of body hair can be used. When discussing head hair, we mean scalp hair exclusively. Body hair encompasses all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The procedure in the lab for processing a test result comprises four key steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the introduction of a sample into a lab's system. This step includes validating the sample's proper sealing and shipping, assigning it a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and entering any supplementary data not captured by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a preliminary rapid assessment for substances of abuse. Screening serves as a cost-friendly method to eliminate drug use in the bulk of samples, yet a positive screen necessitates confirmation for court admissibility. Any samples that test presumptively positive in Screening must undergo additional confirmation.

In cases where a sample is deemed presumptively positive in Screening, additional hair is retrieved from the original specimen and processed for Extraction. This stage extracts drugs from hair at notably lower concentrations than in other methods (e.g., urine or saliva), making hair drug screening the most complex method to execute.

Confirmation for any positive screening result is executed via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptively positive samples are cleansed before confirmation as required. The end-to-end laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation undergoes scrutiny under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and compliance with ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, contrasting with urine tests which have a shorter detection timeframe.
  • Resistance to tampering: Hair drug tests are difficult to rig, ensuring more precise results.
  • Records past usage: They provide a timeline of drug consumption over time, not just recent intake.

Limitations:

  • Cannot trace recent drug use: Detecting drugs in hair takes 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are typically pricier than other methods of drug testing.
  • Result variations: Factors like hair color and individual differences in hair growth can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Though commonly termed "hair follicle tests," the analysis targets the hair shaft, not the follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
