Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Round Lake, Wisconsin. For those in need of a hair drug or alcohol test, our Nationwide testing centers excel in hair testing to suit your needs, whether it's drug, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored tests. Typically, it requires 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from either the crown or body in most scenarios.

Recently, hair follicle drug tests have gained prominence as a preferred method for drug testing. This test is increasingly required by employers, legal entities, and Substance Abuse professionals instead of conventional urine tests. Hair tests are particularly chosen due to their zero-tolerance effectiveness, detecting drug use over a 90-day period, and their resistance to manipulation. That said, urine tests remain more precise for detecting recent drug use within the past 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has become recognized as an effective means for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers an extended timeline of alcohol and drug usage by capturing biomarkers in the strands of the hair as it grows. When cut near the scalp, hair may reveal drug use and alcohol consumption for up to roughly three months. Hair collection is straightforward, comparatively resistant to tampering, and convenient for transport.

A sample consisting of 1.5 inches of approximately 200 hair strands (about the size of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp yields 100mg, the optimal amount for analysis and verification. For EtG, additional, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, a specimen mass of 150mg is suggested. We advise using a jeweler’s scale to measure the specimen. Should scalp hair not be available, a similar quantity of body hair can be used. In the context of head hair, we mean only scalp hair. All other hair forms (facial, axillary, etc.) are considered body hair.

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result encompasses four primary stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the first processing phase of a sample into the lab’s system. This step checks if the sample was correctly sealed and shipped, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any additional data input not covered by an electronic custody chain system.

Screening includes a preliminary quick evaluation for drug use. While Screening is a cost-efficient method for ruling out drug consumption for most samples, a positive screen needs verification to be permissible in legal scenarios. Any samples testing presumptively positive in Screening demand a secondary confirmation.

If a sample tests presumptively positive during the Screening stage, more hair is taken from the original sample and made ready for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at lower concentrations than other methods like urine or oral liquid, which is why hair drug testing is the most challenging method to conduct.

Any positive Screening result is confirmed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptively positive samples are cleansed before confirmation as needed. The complete lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair standards and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 criteria.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair tests can identify drug use for almost 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a significantly shorter detection period.
  • Hard to falsify: Manipulating a hair drug test is quite challenging, leading to more reliable results.
  • Historical insight: It illustrates a usage pattern over a certain timeframe, not merely recent use.

Limitations:

  • Unable to detect immediate use: Drugs take about 5-7 days to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests tend to be more costly compared to other drug testing methods.
  • Result variations: Elements like hair color and individual differences in hair growth may influence drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Though commonly called "hair follicle tests", the test actually examines the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
