Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments in Ruby, Wisconsin. For those needing hair analysis for drugs or alcohol, we excel in hair testing with facilities across all cities Nationwide, ready to conduct such tests. Generally, around 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body is needed. Hair samples can reveal drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored testing options.

Over recent years, hair follicle drug testing has become a more common approach for evaluating drug presence. Numerous employers, legal systems, and Substance Abuse experts now prefer hair analyses over traditional urine samples. Organizations with no-drug-use policies, legal courts, and probation-ordered individuals have turned to this method. The key advantage is its extended drug detection window of up to 90 days, nearly immune to tampering and conducted under observation. However, for detecting recent drug consumption within the past 5 days, urine remains highly accurate.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is now recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a prolonged record of alcohol and drug usage by storing biomarkers within the strands of the growing hair. When collected near the scalp, it can offer up to a three-month detection period for substances. Hair is straightforward to gather, somewhat challenging to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A sample of 1.5 inches, consisting of about 200 hair strands (approximately the size of a #2 pencil) nearest the scalp, produces 100mg of hair, the optimal sample size for analysis. For EtG, additional components, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale to weigh the sample. If scalp hair is not accessible, an equal quantity of body hair can be used. In the context of head hair, we refer exclusively to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other types of hair (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The four principal steps in the laboratory processing of a drug test result include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves the preliminary processing of a specimen into a laboratory’s system. This entails confirming that the sample was sealed and dispatched correctly, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any supplementary data entry not included in an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening consists of an initial swift evaluation for drugs of abuse. Although Screening is an economical method to eliminate drug usage in most samples, a positive screen must be confirmed to be court-admissible. Samples that are presumptively positive in Screening necessitate a subsequent confirmation.

If a sample is tentatively positive during the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the initial specimen and prepared for Extraction. At this stage, drugs are separated from hair at a considerably lower concentration compared to other techniques (such as urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the hardest methodology to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening outcome is performed via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples with presumptive positive results are cleaned before confirmation as required. The entire laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is validated under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug tests can trace drug usage for up to 90 days, whereas urine tests possess a shorter detection period.
  • Hard to deceive: It is exceptionally challenging to deceive a hair drug test, resulting in more reliable results.
  • Delivers historical information: It provides an account of drug usage over time, rather than just reflecting immediate use.

Limitations:

  • Inability to identify recent usage: Approximately 5-7 days are required for drugs to be detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are typically costlier than other drug testing methods.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and individual hair growth differences can influence the levels of drug metabolites in hair.

Note: Although commonly termed as "hair follicle tests", the analysis actually examines the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
