Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing in Rush River, Wisconsin. If you require a hair drug or alcohol test, our services specialize in hair testing, and we feature testing centers across all cities nationwide that can conduct a hair test. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown of the head or body is required and used. Hair tests may be utilized to examine drugs, alcohol/ETG, or offer other tailored hair testing solutions.

In recent times, drug testing methods have increasingly incorporated hair follicle drug tests. Various employers, legal entities, and Substance Abuse experts are opting for hair drug tests over the traditional urine tests. Hair follicle drug tests are favored by employers with strict drug policies, judicial systems, and individuals undergoing probation. The main advantage of hair follicle drug tests is their extended detection period for drug use, typically up to 90 days, using an observed collection process that is virtually tamper-proof. Nonetheless, for detecting drug use within the past five days, urine tests remain the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is recognized as an influential method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. By capturing biomarkers in the strands of hair as it grows, hair offers a prolonged timeline of alcohol and other drug usage. When collected near the scalp, hair can offer a detection duration of up to about 3 months for alcohol and other drugs, making it easy to gather, somewhat challenging to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches and approximately 200 hairs (roughly the diameter of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp provides 100mg of hair, considered the optimal quantity for screening and validation. For EtG, additional factors, or tests beyond 10 panels, a 150mg sample is suggested. It is advisable to weigh the sample using a jeweler’s scale. If there is no scalp hair, an equivalent amount of body hair may be gathered. The term head hair pertains specifically to scalp hair, whereas body hair encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory procedure for processing a drug test result includes four key stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

During Accessioning, a sample is initially processed into a laboratory's system. This step includes confirming the sample was appropriately sealed and shipped, assigning it a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and performing any necessary data entry not already handled by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a swift assessment for the presence of drugs. Although Screening is a cost-efficient method to eliminate drug use in most samples, a positive screen must be validated to be legally acceptable. Presumptive positive samples in Screening require follow-up confirmation.

If a sample is found presumptively positive at the Screening stage, additional hair is removed from the initial collection for the Extraction phase. Drugs are extracted from hair at a much lesser concentration compared to other methods like urine or oral fluid, which makes hair drug screening a notably challenging method to implement.

GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS methods are used to confirm any preliminary positive screening results. All samples that are presumptively positive are cleansed thoroughly before confirmation if needed. The entire lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is assessed under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair standards and the accreditation requirements of ISO / IEC 17025.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Long detection period: Hair drug tests can reveal drug intake for up to 90 days, in contrast with urine tests which offer a shorter detection period.
  • Hard to deceive: The difficulty in deceiving a hair drug test ensures the accuracy of results.
  • Offers historical insights: It can display a pattern of drug intake over time, rather than just recent use.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting recent use: Drugs become detectable in hair after approximately 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are usually more costly compared to other drug testing techniques.
  • Inconsistent outcomes: Factors like hair color and personal differences in hair growth can influence drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Although commonly called "hair follicle tests", the test examines the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
