Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Rusk, Wisconsin. For those requiring a hair drug or alcohol screening, our expertise lies in hair testing, with facilities available in cities nationwide to conduct hair tests. Typically, a sample of 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body is needed. Our hair tests can inspect for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or a variety of customized testing options.

Lately, the hair follicle drug test has become a popular method for drug testing. Employers, legal entities, and substance abuse experts are preferring this test over the traditional urine test. Employers with strict no-drug policies, courts, and probation officers often utilize these tests. The main advantage of hair follicle testing is the extended detection period for drug use, which can reach up to 90 days, collected through an observed process and nearly impossible for manipulation. Yet, for detecting recent drug use within 5 days, urine tests are still considered the most precise test.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is increasingly recognized as an effective means of identifying drug and alcohol consumption. As hair grows, it encases biomarkers within its fibers, offering an extended timeline for alcohol and drug use detection. A sample taken near the scalp can reveal drug and alcohol usage for up to three months. Hair collection is straightforward, challenging to falsify, and convenient to transport.

A 1.5-inch section consisting of roughly 200 hairs (about the thickness of a #2 pencil) cut near the scalp is ideal, supplying 100mg of hair for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or those exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg specimen is suggested. We advise using a jeweler’s scale to measure the specimen’s weight. If scalp hair is not available, an equal quantity of body hair can be used. "Head hair" refers specifically to scalp hair, while "body hair" includes facial, axillary, and other hair types.

Process Overview

The laboratory process for generating a drug test result entails four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the procedure for integrating a sample into a laboratory system, ensuring the sample is properly sealed and transported, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing necessary data entry not provided by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening offers an initial, swift examination for drugs, functioning as a cost-effective method to exclude drug use in most samples; however, any positive preliminary findings must be verified to be permissible in a court setting. Samples that show presumptive positives in Screening mandate a follow-up confirmation.

When a sample tests presumptively positive during Screening, more hair is extracted from the initial batch for the Extraction phase. In this step, drugs are isolated from hair in lower concentrations compared to other testing methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug testing notably complex to execute.

Positive screening results undergo Confirmation using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples with presumptive positives are cleansed before confirmation if necessary. The entire lab procedure, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is meticulously reviewed per the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation standards of ISO / IEC 17025.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests reveal drug use for up to 90 days, whereas urine tests have a more limited time frame.
  • Resilience to tampering: Owing to its complexity, cheating on a hair drug test is considerably more challenging, enhancing accuracy.
  • Offers usage patterns: Beyond detecting recent use, it charts drug use patterns over time.

Limitations:

  • Delayed detection: Drugs become detectable in hair only after about 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Compared to other drug testing methods, hair drug tests tend to be pricier.
  • Result variability: Differences in hair color and growth among individuals can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Although often called "hair follicle tests", these tests examine the hair shaft, not the follicle embedded beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
