Accredited Drug Testing provides thorough hair follicle drug assessments in Sand Creek, Wisconsin. If you're in need of a hair-based drug or alcohol screening, we're proficient in hair analysis and our facilities spread across all major cities nationwide are ready to conduct these tests. A length of 1.5 to 2 inches of hair is generally required from your head or body for these assessments. Hair analyses can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or can be customized for other testing needs.

Recently, drug test methods have increasingly included hair follicle tests. The switch to a hair-based drug screen is becoming common amongst employers, legal entities, and substance abuse counselors, replacing standard urine tests. Hair follicle tests are preferred by organizations with strict drug policies, the justice system, and for those under probation. Their main advantage is a more extended detection window of up to 90 days, with a witnessed collection method that makes tampering nearly impossible. Yet, urine tests remain most accurate for detecting recent drug use within the past five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is recognized as a robust method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair can reveal a prolonged record of alcohol and drug intake by capturing biomarkers within the fibers of the hair as it grows. When taken near the scalp, it can offer up to a 3-month detection timeframe for alcohol and drugs. Hair is easy to gather, challenging to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment of roughly 200 hairs (similar in size to a #2 pencil) near the scalp yields 100mg, the perfect amount for testing and confirmation. For EtG, additional assessments, and tests surpassing 10 panels, 150mg of hair is advised. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale for weighing the sample. If scalp hair isn’t obtainable, the equivalent volume of body hair can be taken. "Head hair" refers specifically to scalp hair, whereas "body hair" pertains to all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The drug testing lab process involves four main stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the first step of integrating a sample into the lab’s workflow. This process includes confirming that the sample was correctly sealed and transported, assigning a random Laboratory Accessioning Number (LAN), and finalizing any additional data entry missing from an electronic chain of custody report.

Screening offers an initial rapid assessment for drugs. Though it serves as a cost-effective method to exclude drug usage in most samples, any positive reading requires confirmation to be legally permissible. Samples that are presumed positive in Screening need further verification.

For samples that test positive provisionally in the Screening stage, more hair is extracted from the primary specimen for Extraction. During Extraction, drugs are isolated from hair at a lower concentration than other methods (like urine or oral fluids), making hair drug testing a complex procedure.

Confirmation of any positive Screening outcome is conducted using techniques such as GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Presumed positive samples undergo a wash before being confirmed as needed. The entire laboratory process, from Accessioning through Confirmation, is vetted under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) hair standard and meets ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests identify drug usage for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests that have a shorter detection period.
  • Hard to manipulate: Cheating a hair drug test is extremely difficult, resulting in more precise results.
  • Tracks usage history: It outlines drug use patterns over time, beyond just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Unable to detect recent consumption: Drugs become detectable in hair around 5-7 days after use.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically cost more than other drug testing methods.
  • Result inconsistencies: Variables like hair color and individual hair growth can influence the metabolites’ concentration in hair.

Note: Often termed "hair follicle tests", this test actually examines the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

When comparing drug testing methods in Sand Creek, WI, hair follicle testing is unmatched. It offers superior detection accuracy compared to traditional urine tests. Unlike urine analysis which offers a short-term detection window, hair testing detects substance use over a much longer period. Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
