In Saratoga, Wisconsin, Accredited Drug Testing offers extensive hair follicle drug testing services. When in need of a hair drug or alcohol evaluation, this facility excels in providing hair analyses, with testing sites available across all U.S. cities. A hair length between 1.5 and 2 inches from the head or body is typically required. Tests can identify drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be tailored to specific needs.

Hair follicle assessments have gained traction recently as a common testing method for drugs. This approach is increasingly adopted by employers, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse counselors, favoring it over traditional urine tests. Employers with strict no-drug policies, courts, and probationers rely on these tests due to their extended detection times—usually around 90 days—and their difficulty to manipulate, unlike urine tests, which are still the go-to for detecting recent drug use within five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair screening is recognized as an effective method for detecting the use of drugs and alcohol. Hair captures a comprehensive history by embedding biomarkers in the strands as they grow. If taken from near the scalp, hair can offer a detection period of up to roughly three months for drugs and alcohol. The collection of hair samples is straightforward, relatively tamper-proof, and easy to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches, consisting of around 200 strands close to the scalp (comparable to a #2 pencil in thickness), yields about 100mg of hair, which is the optimal amount for both screening and confirmation stages. In cases involving EtG, additional panels, or tests exceeding 10 panels, a specimen of 150mg is advisable. It’s recommended to weigh the sample using a jeweler’s scale. Should scalp hair not be available, a similar volume of body hair might be used. When specifying head hair, it exclusively means scalp hair. Body hair pertains to all other types like facial and axillary hair.

Process Overview

The primary phases in processing a drug test in the lab include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning handles the starting steps of integrating a sample into a laboratory system. This phase verifies the proper sealing and shipment of the sample, allocates a randomized LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and fills out any supplemental data that's absent from an electronic chain of custody.

Screening is an initial, economical method to identify drugs of misuse. Although Screening is efficient for excluding drug use in most samples, a positive result demands further confirmation for legal acceptability. All samples that are presumptively positive in Screening require formal confirmation.

For samples presumptive in Screening, additional hair is taken from the original sample and prepped for Extraction. In Extraction, drugs are isolated from hair at concentrations lower than those in other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening notably challenging to execute.

Positive results from Screening undergo Confirmation using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques. Before Confirmation, presumptive positive samples are washed if necessary. The full lab procedure, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is evaluated under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and certifies compliance with ISO / IEC 17025 norms.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection timeline: Hair drug tests can reveal drug use up to 90 days, unlike urine tests, which have a much shorter detection period.
  • Resistance to manipulation: Cheating a hair drug test is extremely difficult, ensuring greater accuracy.
  • Demonstrates usage patterns: Provides insight into drug use trends over time, not just current use.

Limitations:

  • Delayed detection: Drugs take roughly 5-7 days to become evident in hair.
  • Higher cost: Generally, hair drug tests are pricier than alternative testing methods.
  • Result variability: Hair color and individual differences in hair growth can impact drug metabolite levels detected in hair.

Note: While commonly termed "hair follicle tests", the analysis focuses on the hair strand and not on the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Comparing hair follicle tests to urine tests reveals several advantages. In Saratoga, WI, hair analysis is valued for its superior detection period and accuracy. Unlike traditional urine tests, hair tests offer a more reliable way to uncover drug use, with evidence lasting up to 90 days. These tests detect drug use over an extended period of up to 90 days, offering a clear picture of a person's substance history. This prolonged detection window allows employers to make informed hiring and retention decisions, addressing potential concerns regarding an applicant or employee's past behavior.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

Hair tests significantly mitigate tampering risks in Saratoga, WI. In contrast to other methods, these tests offer unquestionable reliability due to the difficulty in altering samples. Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
