Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Sevastopol, Wisconsin. For those in need of a hair or alcohol test, our expertise lies in hair testing, with numerous centers throughout the country capable of conducting these tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body is required. Our hair tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, and provide other specialized testing options.

In recent years, drug testing methods have increasingly shifted towards hair follicle drug tests. This type of test is now more frequently requested by employers, legal systems, and substance abuse specialists over the traditional urine test. Employers with strict drug policies, courts, and probation officers often prefer hair testing for its benefits. The standout advantage of hair testing is its extended detection window, capable of revealing drug use for up to 90 days, all collected under observation, making it nearly impossible to manipulate. However, for detecting recent drug use (within the last five days), urine tests remain the most accurate choice.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has become recognized as an effective method for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. Hair retains a long-term record of substances by capturing indicators in the strands of the emerging hair. When taken near the scalp, hair offers up to about a 90-day detection period for substances. Hair is straightforward to obtain, somewhat hard to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches with roughly 200 hair strands (about the size of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp provides 100mg of hair, which is the ideal quantity for analysis and verification. For EtG, additional analysis, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, a higher quantity of 150mg is suggested. It is advisable to weigh the sample using a jeweler's scale. If scalp hair isn't available, an equivalent amount of body hair may be gathered. When mentioning head hair, it refers specifically to scalp hair. Body hair indicates all other hair varieties (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The primary four stages in the lab processing of a drug test outcome are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning encompasses the initial inclusion of a sample into the lab's system. This step checks that the sample was correctly sealed and transported, assigns a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizes any additional data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening offers an initial rapid assessment for substance abuse. Though Screening is economically efficient for ruling out drug use in the majority of samples, a positive result must be confirmed for legal admissibility. Any specimens that test positive initially in Screening require subsequent validation.

If the initial Screening presumes a positive result, additional hair is taken from the original sample and prepped for Extraction. At this phase, substances are extracted from hair at far lower levels compared to other methods (such as urine or oral fluids), highlighting why hair drug analysis is especially challenging to conduct.

Verification of any positive screening result is accomplished using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumption-positive samples are cleansed before verification as needed. The complete lab procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is inspected under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair classification and the accreditation adhering to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Benefits of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair tests for drugs can identify drug use for as much as 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a more limited timeframe.
  • Challenging to falsify: Falsifying a hair drug test is notably difficult, ensuring more reliable results.
  • Offers historical insight: It illustrates a history of substance use over a duration, rather than just recent intake.

Drawbacks:

  • Inability to detect recent use: Drugs take about 5-7 days to become traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair tests tend to be pricier compared to other testing methods.
  • Result variations: Elements such as hair color and individual hair growth differences can influence the concentration of drug residues in the hair.

Note: Although often termed "hair follicle tests," the analysis targets the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
