Accredited Drug Testing provides thorough hair follicle drug testing services in Shelby, Wisconsin. When you require a hair drug or alcohol examination, our expertise in hair testing ensures access to testing centers nationwide that offer these services. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your head or body is necessary. Hair analyses for drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other custom testing options are available.

Over the past few years, hair follicle drug testing has become increasingly popular for drug screenings. Employers, courts, and substance abuse professionals now prefer hair drug tests over traditional urine tests. This method is favored by employers with zero-tolerance policies, as well as courts and probationers. Hair follicle tests offer the advantage of a longer detection period, typically up to 90 days, with observed collection making it difficult to conceal drug use. Nonetheless, urine tests remain more precise for detecting recent drug use within the past five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is increasingly recognized as a significant method for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers an extended timeline of substance use by capturing biomarkers within the fibers of the developing hair shaft. When taken from near the scalp, hair can reveal drug and alcohol usage over an approximately 3-month period. Hair collection is straightforward, difficult to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches of about 200 hair strands (roughly the thickness of a #2 pencil) taken closest to the scalp gives 100mg, the optimal quantity for testing and confirming results. For EtG, additional tests, and/or panels beyond 10, 150mg is advised. It is advisable to weigh the sample using a jeweler’s scale. In the absence of scalp hair, an equivalent amount of body hair can be used. When referencing head hair, it denotes only scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other hair locations (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

Processing a drug test result in the laboratory entails four primary stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning includes the preliminary handling of a sample within a laboratory environment. This ensures the sample was appropriately sealed and dispatched, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizes any additional data inputs absent in an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a preliminary brief assessment for drugs of abuse. While Screening helps economically rule out drug usage in most samples, a positive indication must be confirmed to be valid in legal scenarios. Samples presumed positive in Screening necessitate a follow-up confirmation.

Should a sample show presumptive positivity at the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample for Extraction. This phase extracts drugs from the hair at a considerably lesser concentration compared to other techniques (ex. urine or oral fluid), which makes hair drug screening a challenging process.

Positive screening outcomes are verified via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples deemed presumptively positive undergo washing prior to confirmation if needed. The entirety of the lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is overseen in accordance with both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the compliance with ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can detect substance use up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a shorter detection timeframe.
  • Challenging to falsify: Cheating on a hair drug test is highly difficult, ensuring more reliable outcomes.
  • Historical insight: It provides a timeline of drug usage over an extended period, not just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent usage: It takes about 5-7 days for drugs to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are typically pricier than other testing forms.
  • Result variability: Aspects like hair coloration and individual differences in hair growth can influence drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: While commonly termed as "hair follicle tests", the testing is performed on the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
