In Sherman, Wisconsin, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services. Our expertise in hair testing provides reliable options for detecting drugs and alcohol. With testing centers nationwide, you can conveniently undergo a hair test. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body is required. These tests are customizable for various substances.

Hair follicle testing has become a preferred method in recent years. Many employers, courts, and substance abuse professionals now favor this approach over traditional urine tests. It's ideal for zero-tolerance policies and probation monitoring due to its long detection window—up to 90 days—and its resistance to tampering. However, for substances used within the last 5 days, urine tests remain most effective.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is regarded as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. It captures biomarkers within the hair strand, providing a retrospective record of drug usage. Collected from the scalp, hair offers a detection timeframe of nearly three months. The collection process is straightforward, the possibility of tampering is minimal, and transportation is effortless.

A sample of 1.5-inch hair strands (roughly 200, or pencil-width), nearest to the scalp, yields 100mg, optimum for screening and verification. For EtG, enhancements, and tests beyond ten panels, a 150mg specimen is advisable. It's best to weigh the sample with a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair cannot be sourced, an equivalent quantity of body hair is acceptable. Head hair signifies the scalp, while body hair encompasses all other types (facial, auxiliary, etc.).

Process Overview

The drug test result process consists of Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial input of a sample into a lab’s framework. It includes confirming proper sealing and shipping, generating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and filling any missing entries absent from an electronic custody chain system.

Screening offers a preliminary assessment for substance abuse. Although it's a cost-efficient strategy to exclude drug usage in most samples, a positive screen demands confirmation to be legitimate in a legal scenario. Screening’s presumptive positives necessitate secondary validation.

A presumptive positive Screening result triggers more hair extraction from the initial sample for Extraction preparation. Here, substances are extracted at a diminished concentration compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), marking hair drug analysis as the most challenging method to execute.

Confirmation involves GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS for any positive Screening outcomes. Samples with presumptive positives undergo necessary washing prior to confirmation. The whole process from Accessioning to Confirmation is assessed under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and aligned with ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Benefits of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection span: Hair testing identifies drug use for as long as 90 days, unlike urine tests which detect usage for a shorter period.
  • Hard to falsify: Cheating a hair drug test is very challenging, ensuring result accuracy.
  • Shows usage patterns: It reveals a duration pattern of drug use beyond just recent usage.

Drawbacks:

  • Lacks detection of immediate use: Drugs take about 5-7 days to become noticeable in hair.
  • Expense: Generally, hair drug testing costs more than other testing methods.
  • Result variations: Aspects like hair coloration and personal hair growth differences may influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Commonly known as "hair follicle tests," the test examines the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
