Accredited Drug Testing offers thorough hair follicle drug tests in Siren, Wisconsin. Whether requiring a hair drug or alcohol analysis, Accredited Drug Testing is a leader in this field, with testing centers nationally that can conduct hair tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of crown hair is needed, though body hair may suffice. These tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be fully customized for other hair testing needs.

In recent years, drug testing has increasingly relied on hair follicle methods. Employers, courts, and substance abuse professionals frequently demand hair testing over traditional urine tests. Organizations with zero-tolerance policies, judicial systems, and probationers benefit from the extended detection time of up to 90 days that hair testing offers and involves an observed collection process, making result manipulation difficult. Nonetheless, for drug use within the previous 5 days, urine tests remain most accurate.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is recognized as an effective means for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair delivers a prolonged record of alcohol and drug use by capturing biomarkers within the fibers of the maturing hair strand. When collected near the scalp, hair can offer a detection window of up to around 3 months for detecting alcohol and drugs. Hair is straightforward to collect, somewhat challenging to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch sample consisting of about 200 hair strands (approximately the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, the optimal sample size for screening and confirmation. For EtG, add-ons, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. We suggest weighing the sample on a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair isn’t accessible, a comparable quantity of body hair may be taken. When mentioning head hair, we are specifically referencing scalp hair. Body hair refers to all other hair varieties (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The principal phases in the laboratory processing of a drug test outcome are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning includes the initial processing of a sample within a laboratory’s framework. This encompasses verifying that the sample was properly sealed and transported, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any extra data entry not available through an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening comprises an initial rapid evaluation for drugs of abuse. While Screening is an economically efficient method to rule out drug use in most samples, a positive screen must be confirmed for court admissibility. Any samples that are presumptively positive in Screening do necessitate a secondary confirmation.

Should a sample be presumptively positive during the Screening phase, more hair is gathered from the initial specimen and prepared for Extraction. During this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at a considerably lower concentration than in other techniques (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which accounts for the complexity of hair drug screening.

The confirmation of any positive screening result is executed via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples are cleansed before confirmation if necessary. The entire laboratory sequence from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Long detection period: Hair drug tests can detect drug use for up to 90 days, whereas urine tests have a shorter detection period.
  • Challenging to deceive: It is very challenging to falsify a hair drug test, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Offers historical data: It can display a pattern of drug use over time, not just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting recent use: It takes approximately 5-7 days for drugs to be evident in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are generally more costly than other drug testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Elements such as hair color and individual differences in hair growth can influence drug metabolite concentration in the hair.

Note: While commonly called "hair follicle tests," the test itself evaluates the hair strand and not the hair follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
