Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug screening services in Skanawan, Wisconsin. If you're in need of a hair drug or alcohol examination, our expertise in hair testing is renowned, with centers spread across all cities Nationwide capable of conducting such tests. The hair on your crown needs to be 1.5 to 2 inches long or alternative hair from your body may be utilized frequently. Hair tests can analyze drugs, alcohol/ETG, or cater to other tailored hair testing requirements.

Recently, drug testing methodologies have leaned more towards hair follicle analysis. Employers, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse professionals now favor hair testing over typical urine tests. Employers adhering to zero-tolerance policies, judicial institutions, and those on probation often require hair tests. The key advantage of hair tests is their extended detection period, lasting up to 90 days, involving a monitored collection to mitigate cheating potential. However, for detecting recent drug use within the past 5 days, urine testing remains the most reliable.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is recognized as a robust method for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. Hair can encapsulate a historical record of alcohol and drug use by trapping biomarkers within the hair strand's fibers. When hair is gathered close to the scalp, it can offer a detection period of up to around 3 months for alcohol and other substances. Hair is easy to gather, relatively hard to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment of roughly 200 hair strands (approximately the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair—ideal for screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or tests beyond 10 panels, 150mg of the specimen is suggested. It's advisable to use a jeweler’s scale for weighing the specimen. If scalp hair isn't accessible, an equivalent quantity of body hair may be taken. When head hair is mentioned, it refers solely to scalp hair, whereas body hair indicates all other hair forms (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The lab processing of a drug test result primarily involves these four steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the first stage of processing a sample within a lab's framework. This step checks that the sample was correctly sealed and dispatched, allocates a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizes any extra data entry not supplied by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a preliminary rapid assessment for drugs of abuse. Although Screening is a budget-friendly method to exclude drug use in most samples, a positive screen must be confirmed to be valid in legal settings. Any samples in Screening that are presumptively positive necessitate further confirmation.

Should a sample be presumptively positive at the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample and prepared for Extraction. In this process, drugs are extracted from hair at much lower concentrations than in other techniques (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most challenging technique to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening outcome is executed via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples undergo washing before confirmation if needed. The comprehensive lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug tests discern drug use for as long as 90 days, unlike urine tests with a narrower detection window.
  • Resistance to tampering: Cheating a hair drug test is exceedingly difficult, enhancing result reliability.
  • Historical usage data: It furnishes a pattern of drug consumption over time, not just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: Drugs become detectable in hair roughly 5-7 days post-consumption.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically incur higher costs than alternative drug testing approaches.
  • Result variability: Variables such as hair color and individual discrepancies in hair growth can influence drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Even though commonly called "hair follicle tests", the analysis pertains to the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
