Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug screening services in St. Croix Falls, Wisconsin. For individuals requiring a hair drug or alcohol test, our expertise in this field is unmatched, with facilities available in cities nationwide. Hair tests typically require 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the scalp, although body hair can also be used. This method can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, and offers other tailored testing options.

Recently, the preference for drug testing has shifted towards hair follicle methods. A range of entities, including employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse specialists, are favoring hair drug tests over conventional urine tests. Organizations with strict anti-drug policies, legal bodies, and those managing probation often opt for hair follicle testing. Its main advantage is a longer detection time frame for drug use, up to 90 days, collected through a monitored process, making it highly reliable. However, for identifying drug use within the last 5 days, urine testing remains unparalleled.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is increasingly regarded as an effective means for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. It offers a comprehensive history of substance use by capturing biomarkers in the structure of the hair as it grows. When hair is collected from near the scalp, it can reveal substance use for up to three months. Hair is easy to collect, not easily tampered with, and straightforward to transport.

A 1.5-inch sample, containing roughly 200 hair strands (comparable to the width of a #2 pencil), provides 100mg of hair, which is optimal for both screening and verification. For EtG, additional tests, or those beyond 10 panels, a specimen of 150mg is suggested. We advise using a jeweler's scale to weigh the specimen. If head hair is unavailable, an equivalent amount of body hair can be used. When discussing head hair, we are specifically referring to hair from the scalp. Body hair encompasses all other types (facial, underarm, etc.).

Process Overview

The processing of a drug test result in a laboratory involves four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves integrating the sample into the lab's system, which includes confirming proper sealing and shipment, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any data entry that is not automatically provided.

Screening serves as an initial, rapid assessment for substances of abuse. While it is a cost-effective method for eliminating drug use in most samples, any positive results must be verified for court admissibility. Samples with positive indications in Screening require further confirmation.

For samples with a positive indication during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the original sample for the Extraction phase. Here, drugs are isolated from hair at concentrations lower than those found in other testing methods (such as urine or oral fluid), highlighting the complexity of hair drug screening.

Positive screening results undergo Confirmation using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Presumptive positive samples are cleaned prior to confirmation as needed. The entire process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is evaluated under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair standards and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair testing can identify substance use up to 90 days previously, unlike urine tests which have a limited timeframe.
  • Hard to manipulate: Hair tests are challenging to falsify, ensuring more reliable results.
  • Captures past usage: Can show patterns of drug use over time, not merely recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: Drugs become detectable in hair only after about 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair testing is usually more costly than other drug testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Hair color and personal differences in hair growth can alter drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Commonly called "hair follicle tests," this test actually examines the hair strand, not the hair follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
