Accredited Drug Testing offers thorough hair follicle drug testing services in Stanton, Wisconsin. If you're in need of hair drug or alcohol testing, Accredited Drug Testing is an expert in this area, with facilities available nationwide to conduct hair tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your scalp or body is needed for the test. Hair testing can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be customized for specific needs.

In recent times, hair follicle drug testing has become a more popular method for drug testing. Employers, courts, and substance abuse experts are increasingly opting for hair tests over traditional urine tests. These tests are favored for zero-tolerance policies, legal purposes, and probation as they offer a longer detection window, up to 90 days, collected under direct observation making cheating nearly impossible. Nevertheless, for recent drug use within five days, urine tests remain the most accurate.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is recognized as a robust method for identifying alcohol and drug usage. Hair traps biomarkers within the strands, offering a comprehensive history of substance use. When collected near the scalp, hair can provide an approximate 3-month detection period for alcohol and drugs. The collection process is straightforward, with minimal risk of tampering, and facilitates easy transport.

A 1.5-inch sample comprising roughly 200 strands (comparable in size to a #2 pencil) near the scalp yields 100mg of hair, ideal for both initial screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, or panels exceeding 10, 150mg of the sample is advisable. It's beneficial to measure the sample using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair isn't available, an equivalent amount of body hair can be utilized. When mentioning head hair, it denotes scalp hair exclusively. Body hair includes all other hair varieties (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The primary steps in the laboratory drug test processing are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the first step where a sample is integrated into the lab system. This step involves confirming the sample's proper sealing and shipment, assigning a LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any missing data entry absent in an electronic custody system.

Screening offers a rapid assessment for substance abuse. Although cost-effective, a positive Screening result requires Confirmation to be legally acceptable. Presumptively positive samples in Screening necessitate secondary verification.

Should a sample indicate positivity in the Screening phase, additional hair is gathered from the original specimen for Extraction. During this phase, drugs are isolated from hair at much lower concentrations compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), highlighting the complexity of hair drug screening execution.

Confirmation follows positive screening, using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Presumptive positives undergo washing prior to confirmation as necessary. The complete laboratory sequence from Accessioning to Confirmation adheres to both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 certification standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair tests can identify drug usage for up to 90 days, in contrast to the shorter detection window of urine tests.
  • Low likelihood of deception: Altering hair test results is quite challenging, ensuring greater result accuracy.
  • Chronological substance use data: Offers an overview of drug consumption patterns over time, not merely recent intake.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect immediate consumption: Drugs are traceable in hair approximately 5-7 days post-use.
  • Expense: Hair testing is typically pricier than alternative drug testing methods.
  • Result inconsistencies: Variables like hair color and individual hair growth variations can impact metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Commonly termed as "hair follicle tests", the actual analysis is conducted on the hair strand, excluding the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing in Stanton, WI

When comparing hair follicle testing to traditional urine tests, the benefits become clear. Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
