Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug screening services in Stevenstown, Wisconsin. With a focus on hair and alcohol testing, we have facilities accessible Nationwide, ready to administer these tests. Generally, hair from the crown of the head is preferred, or body hair may suffice. Tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, and offer customizable testing solutions.

The hair follicle drug test has gained popularity over recent years. Many employers, judicial systems, and substance specialists are opting for hair tests over urine samples. Hair follicle tests benefit entities with stringent drug policies, court systems, and probation departments due to their extended detection capabilities, monitoring drug use up to 90 days. Despite this, urine tests remain the most accurate for drug use within the last five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. It captures a long-term use history by embedding biomarkers within the strands of growing hair. When taken close to the scalp, hair samples can reveal up to a three-month history of alcohol and drug use. The procedure is easy to perform, challenging to tamper with, and straightforward for shipping.

A sample sized at 1.5 inches from around 200 hair strands (similar to a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp offers 100mg, which is the optimal sample for both screening and confirmation. For EtG tests, additional tests, and/or those exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg sample is advisable. Using a jeweler’s scale for weighing the specimen is suggested. In the absence of scalp hair, a comparable amount of body hair can be used. Here, "head hair" strictly refers to scalp hair, while "body hair" encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test encompasses four key stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning marks the sample's initial integration into the lab’s protocol. This includes ensuring correct sealing and shipment of the sample, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any necessary data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening acts as a preliminary assessment for drugs of abuse. Though cost-effective for mostly negating drug usage on the majority of samples, a positive screening result requires confirmation to hold up in legal settings. Consequently, additional validation is necessary for any samples flagged as presumptively positive during Screening.

For samples assumed positive after Screening, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample and prepared for further evaluation in the Extraction phase. Here, drugs are withdrawn from the hair at a significantly lower concentration than other methods (ex. urine or oral fluid), contributing to the complexity of hair drug testing.

Any positive screening findings undergo Confirmation through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. If required, all presumptive positive samples are cleaned prior to confirmation. This entire laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation is assessed under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accredited to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Benefits of hair drug analysis:

  • Extended detection: Hair tests can reveal drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests that have a shorter detection period.
  • Hard to deceive: Cheating a hair drug test is nearly impossible, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Historical insight: Offers a chronological pattern of drug use rather than just recent usage indicators.

Drawbacks:

  • No recent use detection: It takes roughly 5-7 days for drugs to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests tend to be more costly compared to other drug testing approaches.
  • Variability in outcomes: Variables like hair color and individual hair growth differences can influence the levels of drug metabolites in hair.

Note: Even though these tests are commonly called "hair follicle tests", they actually examine the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
