In Stockbridge, Wisconsin, accredited institutions provide full hair follicle drug testing services. Whether you're looking for hair drug or alcohol testing, these centers are experts in hair analysis, with locations throughout all cities in the nation to administer tests. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body is required. These tests can screen for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be customized for other analyses.

Recently, hair follicle testing has become more prevalent in drug testing processes. More employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse experts now prefer hair tests over standard urine tests. Employers with strict anti-drug policies, as well as courts and probation officers, are notable users of these tests. The main advantage is its extended detection time, typically up to 90 days, making it difficult to falsify compared to urine tests. However, urine tests remain the best at detecting very recent usage within the past 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has emerged as a robust method for identifying the use of drugs and alcohol. The hair captures a prolonged record of substances by embedding biomarkers within its fibers as it grows. When acquired near the scalp, hair can offer roughly a quarter-year evaluation window for alcohol and drugs. Collecting hair is straightforward, fairly resistant to tampering, and easy for shipping.

A 1.5-inch section with around 200 hair strands (resembling a #2 pencil in thickness) closest to the scalp provides 100mg of hair, the optimal sample size for both screening and verification. For EtG, add-ons, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, a sample of 150mg is advisable. It’s ideal to weigh the sample with a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair isn’t accessible, a similar quantity of body hair may be used. By head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other forms (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The critical phases in the lab handling of a drug test result include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves initial sample registration in a lab’s system. This process ensures the sample was appropriately sealed and sent, allocates a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizes additional data entry not supplied by an electronic chain of custody.

Screening provides an expedited overview for drugs of abuse. While Screening is an economical approach to eliminate drug consumption in most samples, a positive finding requires confirmation for legal admissibility. Any samples preliminarily positive in Screening demand further confirmation.

Should a sample test preliminarily positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the original sample for the Extraction process. Here, drugs are separated from hair at a much lower concentration than other methods (ex. urine or oral fluid), positioning hair drug testing as the most challenging method to execute.

Positive screening outcomes undergo Confirmation using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Pre-confirmation, all presumptive positive samples are cleaned as necessary. The entire lab process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is audited under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair tests can identify drug use up to 90 days prior, contrasting with urine tests which offer a shorter detection span.
  • Resistant to manipulation: Cheating on a hair drug test is highly challenging, thus enhancing result reliability.
  • Historical insight: It records behavioral patterns of drug consumption, not solely recent activities.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect immediate use: Drugs typically take 5-7 days to become apparent in hair.
  • Expense: Hair tests generally cost more than alternative testing methods.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and individual hair growth differences can affect drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Although commonly called "hair follicle tests", the analysis focuses on the hair strand rather than the follicle itself beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Stockbridge, WI, hair follicle testing offers significant advantages over traditional urine tests. Hair tests are known for their superior detection accuracy, delivering more reliable results. Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
