Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug analysis in Summit Corners, Wisconsin. If you require a hair-based drug or alcohol screening, Accredited Drug Testing is an expert in hair analysis, with facilities across all U.S. cities to conduct these tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown of the head or body can be used. Tests cover drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored options.

Recently, the trend in drug screening favors hair follicle tests. Increasingly, employers, judicial bodies, and substance abuse experts prefer hair over urine tests. Employers with strict no-drug policies, courts, and probation officers find it beneficial. The major advantage is an extended detection window of up to 90 days, collected under supervision, minimizing the chance of tampering. Urine tests remain the best for recent drug use within 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers a prolonged record of alcohol and other drugs by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the developing hair strand. Collecting hair near the scalp allows for a detection period of up to roughly 3 months for alcohol and other drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, moderately resistant to tampering, and conveniently shipped.

A 1.5-inch section of approximately 200 hair strands (comparable to the diameter of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp will yield 100mg, which is the optimal sample size for analysis and validation. For EtG, additional analyses, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg is advised. It's suggested to measure the sample using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is not present, a comparable volume of body hair may be used. When mentioning head hair, it specifically refers to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other types (including facial and axillary hair).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test consists of four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning regards the sample’s initial induction into a laboratory’s workflow. This step includes confirming the sample’s proper sealing and shipping, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any further data input not covered via an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening entails a preliminary rapid test for substances of abuse. While Screening is a cost-efficient method to invalidate drug usage in most samples, a positive screen necessitates confirmation for it to be legally valid. Samples deemed presumptively positive in Screening require secondary validation.

If Screening indicates a presumptively positive outcome, additional hair is extracted from the original sample for Extraction preparation. In Extraction, drugs are isolated from hair at a considerably lower concentration compared to alternative methodologies (such as urine or oral fluid), which makes hair drug screening the most challenging methodology to execute.

Confirmation for any positive Screening result is executed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples with presumptive positives are cleansed as needed prior to Confirmation. The complete laboratory protocol from Accessioning to Confirmation is audited under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO/IEC 17025 standard accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection duration: Hair drug tests reach up to a 90-day detection range, unlike urine tests which have a limited detection span.
  • Resistance to tampering: Hair drug tests are challenging to manipulate, enhancing the accuracy of results.
  • Provides historical insight: It reveals a pattern of drug consumption over a period, not just recent intake.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent consumption: Drugs take about 5-7 days to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are usually costlier than other testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Aspects like hair color and individual hair growth differences can impact drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Although called "hair follicle tests", the assessment analyzes the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Hair follicle testing in Summit Corners, WI outshines traditional urine tests by offering a more extensive detection window, ensuring superior accuracy and reliability. Unlike the limited detection capabilities of urine tests, hair samples reveal drug habits over a lengthy period, proving to be a more comprehensive solution.

Employers are opting for hair tests due to their remarkable ability to detect drug usage patterns over the past three months. This approach provides a clearer picture of long-term substance use, offering an essential advantage over the short window that urine testing covers.

Extended Detection Window

The extended detection window of hair follicle testing provides employers in Summit Corners, WI with an invaluable tool to assess potential and current employees' substance use history. Unlike other testing forms, hair analysis reveals drug consumption over a period of up to 90 days, offering clear insights into long-term behavioral patterns.

With this broader perspective, companies can make more informed hiring and retention decisions. This long detection period also serves as a deterrent against substance use among employees, promoting a healthier workplace environment.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
