Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Swiss, Wisconsin. If you require a hair or alcohol test, Accredited Drug Testing specializes in these services, and we operate centers in cities nationwide that can conduct such tests. With a minimum of 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body, we can analyze samples for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or offer other tailored testing solutions.

In recent times, hair follicle tests have become increasingly prevalent in drug testing. Many employers, judicial bodies, and substance abuse experts opt for hair drug tests over the traditional urine tests. Hair follicle tests are favored by organizations with strict drug policies, legal systems, and probation officers due to their longer detection timeframe, typically up to 90 days, through an observed collection process that is difficult to tamper with. However, urine tests remain most accurate for detecting recent drug use within the past five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as a significant method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. By capturing biomarkers within the growing hair strands, hair offers a comprehensive record of alcohol and other drugs. When harvested near the scalp, hair can showcase a detection duration of up to roughly three months for alcohol and drug traces. The collection process for hair is straightforward, somewhat resistant to tampering, and easy to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment consisting of about 200 hair strands (resembling the size of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp produces 100mg of hair, the optimal sample for both initial and confirmatory testing. For EtG, supplements, and/or examinations exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg sample is advisable. We suggest measuring the sample with a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is not present, an equivalent quantity of body hair may be retrieved. When mentioning head hair, we are specifically indicating scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other hair types (facial, underarm, etc.).

Process Overview

The procedure for analyzing a drug test result in a lab consists of four primary stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the first step, involving the integration of a sample into the lab's framework. This process includes ensuring the sample was securely sealed and safely delivered, allocating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and fulfilling any extra data entries not encompassed by an electronic chain of custody process.

Screening is an initial rapid assessment for illicit drug traces. Although Screening is efficient for discounting drug use in most samples, any positive findings must be verified to be legally acceptable. Samples that show a tentative positive during the Screening stage require further confirmation.

For samples that test tentatively positive during the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the initial batch and readied for Extraction. This involves isolating drugs from the hair at a substantially reduced concentration compared to other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), contributing to the complexity of hair drug analysis.

GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS are utilized for confirming any positive screening outcome. All samples that are presumptive positives undergo a washing process prior to confirmation as necessary. The entirety of the lab process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is evaluated under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair classification and ISO / IEC 17025 certification standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug assessments can reveal drug use up to 90 days back, unlike urine tests which have a limited detection span.
  • Difficult to manipulate: Hair drug evaluations are hard to falsify, ensuring more precise results.
  • Offers historical insight: It reveals a trajectory of drug use over time, not solely recent activity.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting recent use: It requires about 5-7 days for drugs to manifest in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug analyses are ordinarily pricier than other drug testing approaches.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair pigmentation and individual disparities in hair growth can influence the drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Though commonly termed as "hair follicle tests", the examination focuses on analyzing the hair strand, not the follicle within the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

When comparing hair follicle tests to traditional urine tests in Swiss, WI, the former offers numerous advantages. Hair testing outperforms urine tests by providing a longer detection window and greater accuracy. Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
