Process Overview
The laboratory processing of drug test specimens comprises four primary stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.
Accessioning entails the sample's entry into a lab’s tracking system. This phase verifies the sample's proper sealing and shipping, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizes any missing information required by an electronic chain of custody system.
Screening is an initial rapid check for substance misuse. While Screening is an economical approach to exclude drug presence in most samples, confirmed results are necessary for legal validation. Any samples testing presumptive positive in Screening must undergo secondary verification.
If a sample has a presumptive positive result in the Screening phase, additional hair is taken from the primary sample for Extraction. During Extraction, drugs are removed from hair in much lower concentrations than other testing methodologies (ex. urine or oral fluid), which makes hair drug analysis the most challenging methodology to conduct.
Verification of any positive Screening finding is performed through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Samples testing presumptive positive are washed before confirmation, as required. The whole lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation undergoes review under both CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair guidelines and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.
