Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Thornton, Wisconsin. Whether you need testing for drugs or alcohol, Accredited Drug Testing has expertise in hair analysis with centers across all cities nationwide. A hair sample of 1.5 to 2 inches from the crown or body is typically needed. Hair tests can analyze for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other specific testing needs.

Over recent years, drug testing methods have increasingly favored hair follicle drug tests. Many employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse professionals are opting for hair testing over traditional urine analysis. This is primarily due to the extended detection period of hair follicle tests, which can typically track drug use for up to 90 days, collected under observation, making them nearly impossible to manipulate. Nonetheless, for detecting drug use within the past 5 days, urine tests remain superior.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is now recognized as an effective means for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers a prolonged record of substance use by embedding biomarkers within the strands as the hair grows. When cut close to the scalp, hair can reveal a detection span of up to roughly 90 days for alcohol and drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, not easy to tamper with, and simple to send.

A hair specimen of 1.5 inches and about 200 strands collected nearest to the scalp equates to 100mg, which is the preferred amount for evaluations. For assessments involving EtG, add-ons, and/or more than 10 panels, a specimen size of 150mg is ideal. It's advisable to measure the sample using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair isn't an option, a comparable quantity of body hair may be utilized. By head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair. Body hair, on the other hand, refers to all other types of hair, including facial and axillary.

Process Overview

The laboratory workflow for drug test evaluation consists of four principal steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial phase of incorporating a sample into a lab’s database. This entails confirming the sample’s proper sealing and shipping, allocating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any essential data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a preliminary assessment for illicit substances. Although Screening is economical for excluding drug consumption in the majority of cases, a positive preliminary result requires confirmation to be valid in legal proceedings. Any samples showing presumptive positive results during Screening necessitate further confirmation.

If a sample exhibits a presumptive positive result at Screening, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample for the Extraction process. Drugs are separated from hair at significantly lower concentrations than other techniques (such as urine or oral fluids), which makes hair drug analysis the most challenging method to conduct.

Confirmation of any screening positive is executed through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples showing presumptive positives undergo washing before confirmation, if necessary. The complete lab procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation complies with both CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair criteria and accreditation under ISO / IEC 17025 guidelines.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug assays can reveal drug usage for up to 90 days, a longer span than the more limited window of urine tests.
  • Hard to bypass: Manipulating a hair drug test is extremely difficult, which ensures more reliable results.
  • Tracks historical use: The tests can display drug use tendencies over extended durations, not merely recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Inability to show immediate use: Drugs only become detectable in hair after about 5-7 days post-use.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing tends to be costlier than other testing approaches.
  • Outcome variations: Elements such as hair color and individual differences in hair growth rate might influence drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Typically referred to as "hair follicle tests", this test evaluates the hair strand itself, not the follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
