Accredited Drug Testing offers a comprehensive solution for hair follicle drug testing in Three Lakes, Wisconsin. Whether you're in need of a drug or alcohol test, our specialty lies in hair testing, with test centers across all cities nationwide to facilitate your needs. Typically, a hair length of 1.5 to 2 inches is required from the crown or body. This method can test for drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other specific substances.

The popularity of hair follicle testing has grown significantly over recent years, becoming a preferred method for many companies, courts, and Substance Abuse experts who require a more reliable alternative to urine tests. Hair tests reassure those with strict no-drug policies—such as employers and courts—as they offer an extensive detection period of up to 90 days. Additionally, this test is conducted under observation, making it incredibly difficult to tamper with. Urine tests, while accurate for recent use within 5 days, cannot match the historical scope that hair testing provides.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has grown in recognition as an efficient method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair retains a comprehensive record of substance use by embedding biomarkers within the strands as they grow. When sourced near the scalp, hair can offer around a three-month observation period for alcohol and drug presence. The collection process for hair is straightforward, with minimal risk of tampering, and it's convenient for transportation.

A hair sample measuring 1.5 inches comprising roughly 200 strands (similar to a #2 pencil) adjacent to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, which is the optimal amount for testing and verification. For EtG, accessories, and/or examinations exceeding 10 panels, a larger specimen weighing 150mg is advised. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale for weighing. If scalp hair is inadequate, a matching quantity of body hair can be collected. Referring to head hair strictly means scalp hair. Body hair pertains to all other forms (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug testing outcome comprises four main phases: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

In the Accessioning phase, a sample undergoes initial processing into a laboratory setup. This phase includes checking the sample’s proper sealing and shipping, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and fulfilling any extra data input not covered by an electronic custody chain system.

The Screening phase entails a preliminary swift check for abused substances. Although Screening is a budget-friendly method to dismiss drug usage in many cases, a positive result must be substantiated for court acceptance. Any samples that are presumptively positive in Screening require further verification.

During the Screening stage, if a sample is indicated as presumptively positive, additional hair is extracted from the original sample for the Extraction phase. Here, drugs are extracted from hair at much lower levels than with other techniques (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening a challenging procedure.

The Confirmation of any positive result from the screening phase is achieved via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples indicated as presumptively positive undergo washing before Confirmation as required. The comprehensive laboratory handling from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized both under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the ISO / IEC 17025 certification standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug testing can identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests, which have a shorter detection period.
  • Hard to manipulate: Cheating a hair drug test is quite hard, thus results are more reliable.
  • Offers historical insight: It reveals a drug use pattern over time, not merely recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Can't detect recent intake: It requires around 5-7 days for substances to be noticeable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests tend to cost more than other drug testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair color and individual growth differences can influence the drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: While frequently termed as "hair follicle tests", the analysis primarily focuses on the hair strand itself and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Why does hair follicle testing surpass urine testing in Three Lakes, WI? Primarily, hair tests provide a superior detection period, which is unmet by traditional urine tests. The accuracy and reliability of hair tests, in detecting a substance usage history up to 90 days, make them an invaluable tool when comprehensive information is required.

Extended Detection Window

In Three Lakes, WI, the extended detection range of hair follicle testing is invaluable—it identifies drug use over about 90 days. This long window offers employers a detailed view of an individual's substance history, far beyond the limitations of most other testing methods, ensuring well-informed hiring or monitoring decisions.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
