Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug analysis in Trempealeau, Wisconsin. For those needing a hair or alcohol test, Accredited Drug Testing excels in hair analysis, with facilities available nationwide. A minimum of 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the scalp or body is generally needed. Our hair evaluations can screen for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or tailor to specific needs.

In recent times, hair follicle drug tests have become a prominent method in substance evaluations. Various employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse experts now prefer hair analyses over typical urine tests. Hair exams are favored by entities enforcing strict anti-drug policies, courts, and probationers. Their superior advantage is a longer detection window, reaching up to 90 days, with the benefits of observational collection and significantly reduced tampering risks. Nevertheless, for identifying drug use within a recent 5-day window, urine tests remain the gold standard.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has gained recognition as a robust method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a prolonged history of substance intake by embedding biomarkers within the strands as they grow. When collected near the scalp, hair offers up to an approximate 3-month window for detecting alcohol and drugs. Hair is easy to gather, moderately challenging to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch section comprising roughly 200 hair strands (comparable in size to a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp will provide 100mg of hair, which is the optimal amount for screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or panels exceeding 10, 150mg of the sample is advised. We suggest measuring the sample with a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is not available, a similar quantity of body hair may be used. When mentioning head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair. Body hair refers to every other type (such as facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The four primary phases included in laboratory processing of a drug test outcome are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves the preliminary processing of a specimen into a lab’s system. This step includes checking that the sample was properly sealed and sent, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any other necessary data entry not handled by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening comprises a quick preliminary analysis for substances. Even though Screening offers a cost-effective way to eliminate drug usage on most samples, a positive screen must be confirmed to be deemed permissible in court. Samples that show a presumptive positive in Screening do require additional confirmation.

If a sample shows a presumptive positive during the Screening phase, more hair is extracted from the primary sample and set for Extraction. In this step, substances are extracted from hair at much lower concentrations than in other testing methods (e.g. urine or oral fluid), making hair drug testing the most challenging method to practice.

The Confirmation of any positive screening result is carried out using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Presumptive positive samples are washed before confirmation as needed. The entire lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is reviewed following both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Benefits of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify substance use for up to 90 days, versus urine tests that offer a shorter detection period.
  • Hard to tamper with: Cheating on hair drug tests is quite hard, thereby improving the accuracy of results.
  • Offers historical insights: It can reveal a pattern of substance use over time, not just recent use.

Drawbacks:

  • Cannot identify recent consumption: Drugs become detectable in hair only after about 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically cost more than other drug testing methods.
  • Result variability: Factors such as hair color and individual differences in hair growth can influence drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: While commonly termed as "hair follicle tests," the test itself examines the hair strand and not the hair follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Hair testing triumphs over urine testing for many reasons in Trempealeau, WI. Its superior detection accuracy stems from the longer history of substance absorption provided by hair samples. This allows for a comprehensible analysis of one's substance use patterns.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
