Based in Tripp, Wisconsin, Accredited Drug Testing provides thorough hair follicle drug testing. For hair or alcohol tests, Accredited Drug Testing excels in hair testing with centers across all cities Nationwide. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair is needed for testing from either the scalp or body. These hair tests can screen for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or utilize other personalized testing options.

Recently, hair follicle testing has become a preferred method in drug testing. Employers, legal systems, and Substance Abuse professionals often choose hair tests over traditional urine tests. Hair follicle drug tests are essential for zero-tolerance workplaces, legal situations, and probation compliance. The advantage lies in their extended detection timeframe of up to 90 days, collected through supervised collection, making them hard to falsify. For detecting recent drug use up to 5 days, urine tests remain the most precise method.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is recognized as a robust method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair strands capture biomarkers in their fibers, providing an extended historical record of substance use. When collected near the scalp, hair offers a detection period of about 3 months for substances. It's straightforward to collect, challenging to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment made up of roughly 200 strands of hair (comparable in size to a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is the ideal sample for both screening and confirmation. For tests including EtG, add-ons, and/or those exceeding 10 panels, a specimen weighing 150mg is advised. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale for weighing the specimen. If scalp hair is not obtainable, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be gathered. By head hair, we mean scalp hair exclusively. Body hair refers to any other type (e.g., facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result includes four main steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the first stage, incorporating the integration of a sample into a laboratory's system. This step ensures the sample is sealed and delivered correctly, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any supplementary data entry that isn't handled by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening consists of an initial quick assessment for substances of abuse. While Screening is a cost-efficient means to exclude drug usage largely, a screen yielding positive must be confirmed for legal admissibility. Any samples displaying a presumptive positive in Screening demand additional confirmation.

If Screening suggests a presumptive positive, more hair is extracted from the initial sample and readied for Extraction. Here, substances are removed from hair at a concentration considerably lower than through other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which makes hair drug screening so intricate.

Confirmation of any positive result from screening occurs via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples are thoroughly washed if necessary before confirmation. The entire laboratory workflow from Accessioning to Confirmation is overseen under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair accreditation and ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can reveal drug use up to 90 days earlier, whereas urine tests have a shorter detection window.
  • Cheating is difficult: Avoiding result manipulation in a hair drug test is very challenging, resulting in greater accuracy.
  • Historic data provision: It illustrates a pattern of substance use across a time frame, rather than just recent use.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of identifying recent use: It requires about 5-7 days for substances to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests generally cost more than other drug testing techniques.
  • Result fluctuations: Variables such as hair color and individual hair growth variations can affect the drug metabolites' concentration in hair.

Note: While commonly dubbed "hair follicle tests", the test actually examines the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
