Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Tunnel City, Wisconsin. If a hair drug or alcohol test is needed, our expertise in hair testing is complemented by testing facilities available in all major cities nationwide, ensuring accessibility for a hair test. A typical requirement is 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body. These tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be customized to specific needs.

In recent times, the preference for hair follicle drug tests in drug screening has surged. They are being favored by numerous employers, judicial bodies, and substance abuse experts who choose hair tests over traditional urine tests. Hair follicle tests are particularly popular among employers adhering to strict no-drug policies, judicial systems, and for those on probation due to their expansive detection duration of up to 90 days, high observation standards, and near impossibility of falsification. However, for drug use within the last five days, urine tests remain the gold standard for precision.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has been recognized as a reliable means for identifying drug and alcohol use. Hair retains a prolonged history of substances by embedding biomarkers within the hair fiber as it grows. When hair is collected near the scalp, it offers nearly a three-month detection span for alcohol and other substances. It is effortless to collect hair, challenging to tamper with, and straightforward to transport.

A 1.5-inch hair segment consisting of roughly 200 strands (approximating a #2 pencil in width) near the scalp yields about 100mg of hair, which is the perfect quantity for screening and further analysis. For EtG extensions and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, a specimen weight of 150mg is advised. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale for weighing. In the absence of scalp hair, a comparable amount of body hair can be harvested. The term head hair strictly refers to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other types of hair (such as facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory evaluation of a drug test encompasses four key stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning refers to the initial integration of a sample into a lab’s database. This step entails confirming the sample's proper sealing and shipping, assigning an arbitrary LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and fulfilling any missing data entry absent in an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a preliminary assessment of substances of abuse. While Screening is a cost-efficient approach to eliminate drug usage in most samples, any positive screen requires confirmation for legal acceptance. All samples presumed positive during Screening need secondary verification.

Should a sample be deemed tentatively positive during Screening, additional hair is obtained from the original sample for Extraction. In this phase, substances are extracted from hair at much lower concentrations compared to other techniques (e.g., urine or oral fluid), highlighting why hair drug testing is notably challenging.

Verification of any positive screening outcome occurs via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples suspected to be positive are cleansed prior to Confirmation if necessary. The comprehensive lab procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized following both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accredited by ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection duration: Hair testing can uncover drug consumption up to 90 days, in contrast to the shorter detection period of urine tests.
  • Difficult to manipulate: Manipulating hair drug tests is challenging, ensuring greater result accuracy.
  • Offers historical insight: It reveals a trend of substance use over time, beyond recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent consumption: Drugs become detectable in hair approximately 5-7 days post-consumption.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing is often pricier compared to other methods.
  • Result discrepancies: Factors like hair color and individual hair growth differences can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: The tests, often termed "hair follicle tests", actually examine the hair strands, not the follicles beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
