In Tustin, Wisconsin, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments. If you're in need of a test for substances or alcohol, our specialty is hair testing, with centers available nationwide. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head is required, though body hair can also be used. These tests identify drugs, alcohol/ETG, and offer various specialized testing options.

In recent times, hair follicle drug testing has gained traction in drug testing practices. Employers, judiciary systems, and substance abuse experts often prefer hair tests over traditional urine tests. This method is favored by entities with strict no-drug policies, courts, and individuals under probation. Hair tests benefit from a lengthy 90-day detection window, involve direct observation during collection, and are extremely difficult to forge. For detecting drug use within the last 5 days, urine tests remain the most precise option.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is increasingly recognized as a potent method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures an extended timeline of alcohol and drug usage by embedding biomarkers within the strands of growing hair. When sampled close to the scalp, hair can reveal up to a 3-month detection period for alcohol and drugs. Hair is straightforward to obtain, relatively hard to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch section consisting of roughly 200 hair strands (comparable in size to a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is the optimal amount for screening and verification. For EtG, additional tests, and/or panels exceeding 10, a specimen of 150mg is advised. It is recommended to measure the sample using a jeweler’s scale. In the absence of scalp hair, an equivalent quantity of body hair is acceptable. When mentioning head hair, we refer solely to scalp hair. Body hair denotes all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The key steps in the laboratory analysis of a drug test outcome are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning pertains to the initial handling of a sample into a laboratory's database. This process verifies the correct sealing and shipping of the sample, assigns a LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizes any extra data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening involves a preliminary rapid assessment for drugs of abuse. Although Screening is a cost-efficient method to exclude drug use in most samples, a positive screening result must be verified for court admissibility. Any samples showing presumptive positivity in Screening require additional confirmation.

If a sample shows presumptive positivity in the Screening phase, further hair is extracted from the original specimen for Extraction. Here, drugs are withdrawn from hair at notably lower concentrations than other procedures (ex. urine or oral fluid), making hair drug testing the most complex to conduct.

Confirmation of any positive screening result is accomplished via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples with presumptive positivity undergo washing before confirmation as needed. The complete laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair classification and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, while urine tests possess a shorter detection time frame.
  • Challenging to compromise: It is extremely challenging to falsify a hair drug test, thus enhancing accuracy.
  • Offers historical usage data: It delineates a pattern of drug usage over time, not just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent consumption: Drugs take approximately 5-7 days to be noticeable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically incur higher costs compared to other drug testing methods.
  • Inconsistencies in outcomes: Variables like hair color and individual hair growth differences can impact drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: While often called "hair follicle tests", the test itself evaluates the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Tustin, WI, hair follicle testing surpasses urine tests in several key areas. One major advantage is the extended detection capability, allowing detection of substances long after use. This provides a more thorough history compared to urine tests, which only capture recent activity. The accuracy and reliability of hair tests make them a preferred choice for employers seeking precise evaluations.

Extended Detection Window

In Tustin, WI, hair follicle drug testing provides a significant advantage with its extended detection window. Unlike urine tests, hair follicle testing can detect drug usage up to 90 days prior, offering a comprehensive view of an individual's substance history. This longer detection period is invaluable for employers looking to maintain a drug-free work environment.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

In Tustin, WI, the hair follicle testing method markedly reduces the threat of sample tampering. The integrity of the hair sample is preserved throughout the testing process, ensuring trustworthy and indisputable results. This makes hair testing a highly secure option for employers wishing to avoid the pitfalls of adulteration related to other testing methods.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
