Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Utica, Wisconsin. For those requiring a hair drug or alcohol test, we are experts in hair testing with facilities in cities across the nation ready to conduct them. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your head or body are sufficient. Hair tests provide analysis for substances like drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other customizable testing needs.

Recently, using hair follicle tests as a method for drug screening has gained popularity. Many employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse professionals are opting for hair tests over traditional urine tests. Employers with strict no-drug policies, courts, and probation officers often use hair follicle tests. Their main advantage lies in detecting drug use over a longer timeframe—up to 90 days—with an observed collection that is hard to tamper with. For detecting recent drug use within five days, urine tests remain most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is increasingly recognized as a robust method for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers a prolonged record of alcohol and drug use by capturing biomarkers within the fibers of the growing hair strand. When collected near the scalp, hair can offer a detection period of up to around three months for substances. Hair is straightforward to gather, challenging to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A 1.5-inch sampling of approximately 200 hair strands (about the diameter of a #2 pencil) nearest the scalp yields 100mg of hair, the perfect sample for analysis and confirmation. For EtG, add-ons, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advisable. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale to weigh the specimen. If scalp hair is unavailable, a corresponding amount of body hair may be collected. When mentioning head hair, we mean scalp hair exclusively. Body hair encompasses all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result involves four key steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the initial integration of a sample into a laboratory’s system. This includes confirming the proper sealing and shipping of the sample, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and conducting any additional data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening offers an initial rapid check for drugs of abuse. While Screening is an economical method to exclude drug usage in most samples, a positive screen requires confirmation to be court-acceptable. Any samples presumed positive in Screening necessitate secondary confirmation.

In the event a sample tests positive during the Screening phase, more hair is extracted from the original specimen and prepped for Extraction. During this step, drugs are extracted from hair at much lower concentrations compared to other methodologies (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which makes hair drug screening the most challenging technique to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening result is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples are washed before confirmation as needed. The complete laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation is validated under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, compared to urine tests with a briefer detection period.
  • Cheat resistance: It is exceedingly difficult to deceive a hair drug test, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Historical timeline: It offers a usage pattern over time, not just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Recent use undetectability: Drugs take approximately 5-7 days to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are generally costlier than other methods.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and personal hair growth differences can impact drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Although often called "hair follicle tests", the analysis focuses on the hair strand rather than the hair follicle beneath the scalp

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

The advantages of hair follicle testing in Utica, WI, surpass those of traditional urine tests, offering enhanced detection accuracy and dependability. While urine tests detect recent drug use, hair follicle testing reveals a more extensive history, giving a clearer picture of substance use patterns.

Employers and authorities value hair testing for its precision over a longer period. The ability to uncover drug use history over months with hair tests provides a distinct edge over conventional urine tests.

Extended Detection Window

Hair follicle testing in Utica, WI, provides a long detection window for drug use, up to 90 days, offering a more comprehensive view of an individual’s substance history. This extended period is beneficial for employers seeking to understand a candidate’s or employee’s long-term drug habits.

Using hair tests, organizations gain insight into extended substance use patterns, which urine tests can't offer. This wide-ranging detection capability aids in making informed decisions about potential hires and current employees.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

In Utica, WI, hair follicle testing is favored for its resistance to tampering, significantly reducing sample adulteration risk. This secure testing method ensures reliable results, making it a trusted choice for employers and agencies.

The difficulty in manipulating hair samples compared to urine samples provides confidence in the test outcomes. Hair tests offer an assurance level that other testing methods struggle to match, ensuring honest reporting of substance use.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
