Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Van Dyne, Wisconsin. If you require a drug or alcohol hair test, our expertise is in hair testing, with testing centers available across all major cities nationwide. For a hair test, typically 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body is needed. This test can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other specific requirements.

In recent years, hair follicle drug testing has become a more common method for detecting drug use. Employers, legal systems, and substance abuse experts increasingly favor hair tests over urine tests. Hair follicle drug tests cater to employers with zero-tolerance drug policies, the judiciary, and probation systems. Their advantage lies in a longer detection window—up to 90 days—and the challenging nature of tampering with the samples. However, for drug use within the past five days, urine tests are still regarded as the most accurate method.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has become recognized as a significant method for identifying substance and alcohol consumption. The fibers of the growing hair strand trap biomarkers, offering an extended history of alcohol and other substances. When sourced near the scalp, hair can reveal a detection period of up to about three months for alcohol and drugs. It is straightforward to obtain hair, challenging to tamper with, and simple to send.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches, consisting of around 200 hair strands (roughly the dimension of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp provides 100mg of hair, an ideal quantity for both screening and verification. For EtG, additional tests, and/or panels exceeding 10, 150mg of the sample is advised. It's suggested to use a jeweler’s scale for weighing the specimen. If head hair is not available, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be taken. When mentioning head hair, it specifically means scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result involves four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning deals with the initial registration of a sample in the lab’s system. This process involves confirming that the sample was secured and transported correctly, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any additional data entry not accounted for by an electronic chain of custody.

Screening offers a preliminary quick scan for abused substances. While it is a cost-effective method to disqualify drug usage in most samples, a positive screening necessitates confirmation for court admissibility. Any samples that test presumptively positive in Screening require further confirmation.

Should a sample indicate positive during Screening, more hair is extracted from the initial sample and prepared for the Extraction phase. This phase involves isolating drugs from hair at a more diluted concentration compared to other techniques (e.g., urine or oral fluid), highlighting why hair drug analysis is challenging to perform.

Any positive screening findings are confirmed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples presumed positive are cleansed before confirmation if needed. The whole lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is reviewed under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extensive detection span: Hair assessments can identify substance use up to 90 days prior, contrasting with urine tests that have a shorter timeframe.
  • Resistance to manipulation: It is very arduous to falsify a hair drug test, resulting in more reliable outcomes.
  • Tracks past usage: It reflects a timeline of substance use over a period, not just recent activities.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting recent use: It takes about 5-7 days for substances to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are generally pricier than alternative drug testing methods.
  • Variability in outcomes: Elements such as hair color and personal differences in hair growth impact the concentration of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: Although commonly known as "hair follicle tests", the analysis targets the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Van Dyne, WI, hair follicle testing is superior to urine testing in multiple ways. Hair tests outperform traditional urine tests by effectively identifying drug use over a longer timeframe, providing an up to 90-day detection window. This makes hair testing ideal for employers needing extensive insights into an employee's substance history.

Unlike urine tests, which could miss longer-term drug use, hair follicle tests give comprehensive substance use profiles, ensuring more accurate and thorough results.

Extended Detection Window

The extended detection window offered by hair follicle testing in Van Dyne, WI, sets it apart. Unlike urine tests, which provide short-term results, hair tests offer insights into an individual’s drug use over a 90-day period. This extended timeframe gives employers a detailed understanding of an employee’s substance history.

Employers benefit from a comprehensive view of potential drug use, ensuring informed decision-making while maintaining workplace safety.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

In Van Dyne, WI, hair follicle testing stands out as a tamper-resistant method. The procedure significantly reduces the risk of sample adulteration, offering reliable results that maintain integrity from collection to analysis, thus eliminating doubts over accuracy.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
