Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Vernon, Wisconsin. Whether you require hair drug or alcohol analysis, our specialty lies in hair testing with centers across all cities nationwide. Testing is possible with 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body. Hair samples can be tested for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored options.

In recent times, hair follicle drug tests have become a more common method for drug testing. Employers, court systems, and Substance Abuse experts are opting for hair drug tests over the usual urine tests. These tests are favored by employers with strict no-drug policies, legal systems, and individuals on probation. A key advantage is the prolonged detection period, which can extend up to 90 days, ensure observed collection, and are nearly foolproof. For drug use detection within the last 5 days, though, urine tests still prevail in accuracy.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is now acknowledged as an effective means for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. It provides an extended overview of substance use by capturing biomarkers in the strands of hair as it grows. When gathered near the scalp, hair offers a detection period of nearly 3 months for identifying drugs and alcohol. Collecting hair is straightforward, infrequent to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A sample of 1.5 inches consisting of roughly 200 hair strands (approximately the size of a #2 pencil) from the scalp will yield around 100mg of hair, which is optimal for both screening and confirmation. For EtG evaluations, add-ons, and tests exceeding 10 panels, a specimen of 150mg is recommended. We suggest weighing the sample with a jeweler’s scale. Should scalp hair be unavailable, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be collected. 'Head hair' specifically refers to scalp hair. 'Body hair' refers to any other hair type (like facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

There are four main stages in the laboratory evaluation of a drug test: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning denotes the initial intake of a sample into a laboratory’s processing system. This phase verifies that samples were sealed and dispatched correctly, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any additional data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody.

Screening is a preliminary evaluation checking for drug presence. While it offers a cost-efficient method to dismiss drug use in most samples, a screen that comes back positive must be confirmed for it to hold up in legal proceedings. Samples showing presumptive positives during Screening need a secondary confirmation.

Should a sample show presumptive positivity at the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the original sample to prepare for Extraction. During this phase, drugs are extracted at notably lower concentrations than other tests (in urine or oral fluid, for example); hence, hair drug testing ranks as one of the more challenging techniques.

Confirming any positive Screening outcome involves techniques such as GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Samples showing presumptive positive results are washed before confirmation if necessary. The entire laboratory process from Accessioning through to Confirmation undergoes review under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection timeframe: Hair drug tests identify drug usage over a 90-day period, compared to the shorter timeframe for urine tests.
  • Resistance against cheating: Hair drug tests are notably challenging to alter, ensuring greater result accuracy.
  • Historical usage data: This testing can reveal a pattern of drug consumption over time instead of just current use.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect immediate use: Detectable traces of drugs in hair appear approximately 5–7 days post-use.
  • Expense: Hair drug screening tends to be pricier in comparison to other testing alternatives.
  • Result variability: Disparities like hair color and personal differences in hair growth can influence metabolite concentration within the hair.

Note: Even though often termed as "hair follicle tests," the analysis is conducted on the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
