Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug screenings in Viola, Wisconsin. If you're required to undergo a hair drug or alcohol screening, we've got you covered with specialized centers across the nation, all ready to carry out hair tests. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of head or body hair is required. Hair screenings can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other personalized options.

Recently, hair follicle drug testing has become more prevalent. Employers, courts, and substance abuse professionals increasingly prefer hair screenings over traditional urine tests. Those with stringent no-drug policies, the judiciary, and probation services often opt for hair tests due to their extended detection span—typically up to 90 days—using an observed collection process that's tough to manipulate. However, urine tests remain the most precise for identifying drug use within the last five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as a potent method for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. Hair retains a historical record of alcohol and drugs by capturing biomarkers within its strands as it grows. By obtaining hair samples close to the scalp, a detection period of nearly three months for substances can be achieved. Hair collection is straightforward, fairly resistant to tampering, and convenient for transport.

Collecting a sample of 1.5 inches of roughly 200 hair strands (similar in size to a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is perfect for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or analyses exceeding 10 panels, a specimen of 150mg is advisable. Using a jeweler’s scale is recommended to weigh the specimen. If scalp hair cannot be obtained, an equivalent amount of body hair is acceptable. The term head hair refers only to scalp hair. Body hair includes other types such as facial or axillary hair.

Process Overview

Lab processing of a drug test result involves four key stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves entering a sample into the lab’s system. It includes checking that the sample was sealed and delivered correctly, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and inputting any additional information not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening provides an initial rapid assessment for drugs of abuse. While cost-effective for ruling out drug use in most cases, a positive screen needs confirmation to stand in legal scenarios. Any samples presumed positive during Screening need a secondary validation.

If a sample is positive during the Screening phase, additional hair is taken from the original specimen and prepped for Extraction. Here, drugs are removed from hair at a lower concentration than in other tests (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which is why hair drug testing is among the most challenging methodologies to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Prior to confirmation, all presumptive positive samples are washed as necessary. The lab processes, from Accessioning to Confirmation, undergo reviews under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair classification and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Long detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug usage for up to 90 days, in contrast to urine tests which offer a shorter detection period.
  • Hard to manipulate: Cheating a hair drug test is very difficult, resulting in more reliable outcomes.
  • Tracks past usage: Provides a pattern of drug use over time, rather than just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Cannot identify recent use: Drugs become detectable in hair after about 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically cost more than other testing methods.
  • Result variability: Factors such as hair color and personal variations in hair growth can influence the concentration of drug metabolites in hair.

Note: Despite often being called "hair follicle tests", the test targets the hair strand rather than the follicle under the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Viola, WI, hair tests significantly outperform urine tests due to their superior detection accuracy and reliability. They offer more comprehensive insights into substance use over time.

Unlike urine tests, hair testing provides clearer evidence of long-term drug use. This enhanced detection capability ensures more dependable results, giving employers confidence in their hiring and monitoring processes.

Extended Detection Window

With this extended window, employers can reliably evaluate an applicant's or employee's substance use pattern, making informed decisions based on a longer historical assessment.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

In Viola, WI, hair follicle testing offers a tamper-resistant method of obtaining drug test results. This minimizes the risk of manipulation, ensuring results are trustworthy and verifiable.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
