In Warrens, Wisconsin, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services. Whether you require a hair drug or alcohol test, Accredited Drug Testing is your expert in hair testing, with centers across all cities nationwide to administer these tests. Typically, you’ll need 1.5 to 2 inches of head or body hair, which can be examined for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other specific testing options.

Recently, hair follicle drug tests have become a more common method for drug testing. Employers, legal systems, and substance abuse specialists are opting for hair tests over traditional urine tests. Hair tests are favored by employers with zero-tolerance drug policies, courts, and probation officers due to their extended detection period, typically up to 90 days, and a collection process that is observed, minimizing the potential for cheating. However, urine tests remain the most accurate for detecting recent drug use within the last 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is now regarded as an essential method for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers a prolonged record of substance use by capturing biomarkers within the fibers of the growing hair strand. When taken near the scalp, hair can provide an approximate 3-month detection range for both alcohol and drugs. Hair is easy to collect, relatively resistant to tampering, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment of around 200 hair strands (about the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is the perfect sample amount for screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. It's best to measure the sample with a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is not available, a comparable quantity of body hair might be used. When we mention head hair, we specify scalp hair exclusively. Body hair includes all other types of hair (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The four key stages in processing a drug test in the lab are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning covers the initial process of entering a sample into a lab's system. This process verifies if the sample was correctly sealed and shipped, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finishes any requisite data input absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening provides an initial rapid assessment for abuse substances. Though Screening is a budget-friendly approach to exclude drug use in most cases, a positive result requires confirmation for legal acceptability in court. Any samples showing presumptive positivity in Screening will need a subsequent confirmation.

When a sample is identified as presumptive positive during Screening, more hair is extracted from the initial sample to prepare for Extraction. In this phase, the drug extraction from hair involves much lower concentrations than methods such as urine or oral fluid, marking hair drug tests as the most challenging methodology to carry out.

Confirmation of any positive Screening result employs GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples undergo washing before confirmation if necessary. The complete lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is subject to review under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests, which offer brief detection durations.
  • Resistance to tampering: Hair drug tests are tough to cheat on, enhancing result reliability.
  • Reveals usage history: It offers a timeline of drug use over an extended period, unlike immediate usage indications.

Limitations:

  • Not suited for recent use detection: Drugs become noticeable in hair only after 5-7 days.
  • Higher costs: Hair drug tests usually incur greater expenses compared to other testing methods.
  • Result variability: Aspects like hair color and individual differences in hair growth might alter metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Although often termed as "hair follicle tests", the examination focuses on the hair strand, not the sub-scalp hair follicle.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

When comparing to traditional urine testing in Warrens, WI, hair follicle tests offer superior accuracy and detection reliability. The extended detection period makes it advantageous for employers seeking comprehensive substance histories. While urine tests are more immediate, hair testing minimizes the window for error.

Employers and legal entities value hair follicle testing for its almost impossible-to-cheat nature when compared to urine tests. It's a more reliable and effective method of ensuring substance abuse policies are enforced accurately and efficiently.

Extended Detection Window

One of the main advantages of hair follicle testing in Warrens, WI is its extended detection window—up to 90 days. This timeframe offers employers a broader view of an individual's substance use habits, ensuring more informed decision-making in hiring and monitoring employees.

Compared to other methods, this long detection period allows employers to make better safety and policy compliance decisions. Hair testing can effectively demonstrate a person's commitment to a substance-free lifestyle over a significant period.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

Hair follicle testing in Warrens, WI provides a robust method against sample tampering, significantly reducing adulteration risks. The inherent difficulty in modifying or falsifying hair samples means results are reliable and unquestionable, offering increased integrity in test findings.

By opting for hair testing, employers benefit from a testing method that resists common tampering techniques associated with urine testing. This consistency in outcomes ensures a trustworthy assessment of an individual's substance status.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
