In Washburn, Wisconsin, Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments. Whether you require a drug or alcohol analysis, we are experts in hair-based evaluations and operate testing locations nationwide. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair is necessary from either the scalp or body. Our hair analyses can assess for drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other tailored testing needs.

In recent years, hair follicle drug testing has gained prominence. Numerous employers, judiciary systems, and substance abuse specialists now opt for this method over traditional urine testing. Companies with strict no-drug use regulations, courts, and probation officers favor hair tests due to their extended detection capability of up to 90 days, secure observation during collection, and difficulty to tamper with. However, for identifying recent drug use within 5 days, urine tests remain the benchmark.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is increasingly recognized as an effective means for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. The hair captures a long-term record of alcohol and drug use by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the growing hair strand. When collected near the scalp, hair provides approximately a 3-month detection period for alcohol and drugs. Collecting hair is straightforward, difficult to tamper with, and simple to send off.

A specimen of 1.5 inches, consisting of roughly 200 strands of hair (about the diameter of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp offers 100mg of hair, the optimum sample for testing and confirmation. For EtG, add-ons, or tests above 10 panels, a 150mg specimen is advised. It's best to weigh the sample using a jeweler's scale. If scalp hair is not available, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be used. When mentioning head hair, we mean scalp hair exclusively. Body hair encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The four primary stages in the lab processing of a drug test are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves the initial incorporation of a sample into a lab's framework. This step includes verifying the sample's proper sealing and shipping, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any extra data input not furnished by a digital chain of custody system.

Screening is an initial quick assessment for drugs of abuse. Although Screening is a cost-efficient method to exclude drug usage for most samples, a confirmed positive screen is required for court admissibility. Any specimens preliminarily positive in Screening need a secondary confirmation.

If a sample is suspected positive during the Screening phase, more hair is taken from the initial specimen and readied for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at significantly lower concentrations compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which makes hair drug screening the most challenging method to execute.

Confirmation of any positive result from Screening is carried out using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques. All presumed positive specimens are washed prior to confirmation as needed. The complete lab process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is examined under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug usage for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a shorter timeframe.
  • Hard to deceive: Cheating a hair drug test is extremely difficult, ensuring more reliable results.
  • Offers historical insight: It provides patterns of drug use over time rather than just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Unable to detect recent use: Drugs become detectable in hair only after approximately 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are typically costlier compared to other drug testing methods.
  • Result variability: Aspects such as hair color and individual hair growth differences can impact drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Commonly termed "hair follicle tests", the test actually examines the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

The advantages of hair follicle testing over urine tests in Washburn, WI, are significant. Hair tests provide a broader detection window, while urine tests are more suited for recent use. The precision of hair follicle testing raises the bar in drug detection, offering superior reliability essential for maintaining drug-free environments both professionally and personally.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
