Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Wayne, Wisconsin. Whether you need testing for drugs or alcohol, our specialization in hair analysis is supported by numerous testing centers available in cities across the country. Typically, having 1.5 to 2 inches of hair is necessary, though body hair can be used, allowing for the detection of drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other personalized testing needs.

Increasingly, hair follicle drug tests have become the norm for drug testing. They are now a requirement by many employers, legal systems, and substance abuse specialists as a more reliable alternative to urine tests. Zero-tolerance employers, courts, and probationary supervision favor hair follicle testing for its extended detection timeline of up to 90 days and its observed collection, making it tough to circumvent. Yet, for recent drug use within 5 days, the urine test remains unmatched in precision.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has increasingly gained recognition as an effective means for identifying alcohol and drug usage. Hair offers an extended overview of drug and alcohol consumption by encapsulating biomarkers within the strands as they grow. When trimmed near the scalp, hair can reveal substance use across a roughly 90-day timeframe. It’s straightforward to collect, somewhat resistant to tampering, and convenient to transport.

A hair sample of 1.5 inches, consisting of about 200 strands (similar in size to a #2 pencil) cut nearest the scalp, will yield 100mg, the optimal amount for both screening and confirmation tests. For EtG, additional tests, and those exceeding 10 panels, a specimen weighing 150mg is advisable. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale to weigh the sample. If scalp hair is missing, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be used. When we mention head hair, we mean scalp hair only. All other hair types (such as facial or axillary hair) fall under body hair.

Process Overview

The laboratory assessment of a drug test result comprises four primary stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

During Accessioning, a sample is initially integrated into the lab’s system. This step ensures the sample's seal and shipment were secure, assigns it a LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any supplementary data input not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a preliminary drug check. Although Screening is an economical approach to eliminate drug presence in most samples, a positive screen mandates confirmation to hold up in legal proceedings. Samples testing presumptively positive during Screening necessitate an additional confirmation.

Should a sample test presumptively positive at the Screening phase, extra hair is taken from the original sample for Extraction. Here, drugs are extracted from hair at concentrations much lower than in other methods, such as urine or oral fluids, making hair drug testing the most challenging of all methodologies.

Positive results from Screening undergo Confirmation using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples showing presumptive positivity are washed before Confirmation as required. The entire lab process, from Accessioning through Confirmation, follows the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair guidelines and meets ISO/IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection span: Hair tests track drug use up to 90 days, unlike urine tests with briefer detection periods.
  • Hard to compromise: Hair tests are tough to cheat, ensuring result accuracy.
  • Tracks historical drug use: Offers a timeline of drug consumption, not just recent use.

Limitations:

  • Can't detect recent use: Drugs become detectable in hair within about 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests tend to be pricier than other testing options.
  • Variable results: Factors like hair color and growth variations can influence metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Although they're sometimes called "hair follicle tests", these tests examine the hair strand itself, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Choosing hair follicle testing over conventional urine tests in Wayne, WI provides distinct advantages. These tests offer unmatched detection accuracy and reliability. Hair tests extend detection periods, covering up to 90 days, which traditional urine tests fail to match. This expansive detection helps employers maintain drug-free workplaces by identifying substance use that others might overlook.

Extended Detection Window

In Wayne, WI, hair follicle testing's extended detection window is a game-changer. Spanning up to 90 days, it provides employers with an in-depth view of an individual's substance use history. Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
