Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Wayside, Wisconsin. Whether you're in need of a hair drug or alcohol test, we specialize in hair testing, and our testing centers are available across cities nationwide. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body is needed. Our hair tests can be conducted for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored options.

Over recent years, drug testing methods have increasingly adopted hair follicle drug tests. Many workplaces, legal entities, and substance abuse counselors now prefer hair tests over traditional urine tests. Hair follicle drug tests serve entities with stringent no-drug policies, courts, and probationary cases. The key advantage of hair tests is their extended detection window of up to 90 days, collected under supervision, making them nearly impossible to manipulate. However, for drug use detection within 5 days, urine tests remain the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is now regarded as an effective method for identifying alcohol and drug consumption. Hair captures a timeline of drug and alcohol usage by trapping markers within its fibers as it grows. When taken near the scalp, it can reveal up to a three-month usage history. This method is straightforward to collect, challenging to tamper with, and simple to send.

A 1.5-inch segment consisting of roughly 200 hair strands (resembling a #2 pencil in size) from the scalp delivers 100mg of hair, which is the perfect amount for testing and verification. For EtG, additional testing, or tests beyond 10 panels, 150mg is advisable. We suggest measuring the sample with a jewelry scale. If scalp hair is absent, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be used. "Head hair" refers exclusively to scalp hair, while "body hair" encompasses all other types of hair (facial, underarm, etc.).

Process Overview

The primary steps in lab processing for a drug test outcome include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

During Accessioning, a sample undergoes initial processing in a lab's system. The procedure ensures proper sealing and shipping of the sample, assigns a LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any extra data input absent in an electronic custody tracking system.

Screening conducts a swift preliminary check for drug substances. While it is an economical approach to dismiss drug use for most samples, any positive screen must be validated for legal acceptability. Samples testing positive in Screening require an additional confirmation step.

If Screening results are presumptively positive, more hair is taken from the initial sample for Extraction. Here, drugs are extracted from the hair at a lower concentration compared to other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), making hair drug testing particularly complex.

GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS assays are used to confirm any positive screening outcomes. Necessary washing of presumptive positive samples happens prior to the confirmation stage. The entire lab method from Accessioning to Confirmation follows CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair guidelines and ISO / IEC 17025 certification.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Long detection window: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which offer a shorter window.
  • Difficulty to cheat: Cheating a hair drug test is notably hard, improving result accuracy.
  • Provides historical data: It supplies a timeline of drug usage, not just immediate consumption.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent use: Drugs take about 5-7 days to manifest in hair.
  • Cost: Hair drug tests are generally pricier compared to other testing methods.
  • Variations in results: Factors such as hair color and individual hair growth rates may impact drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Despite being called "hair follicle tests", the test appraises the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
