Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Weirgor, Wisconsin. If you're in need of a hair or alcohol test, our expertise in hair testing can assist, with centers available in cities nationwide to conduct such tests. Generally, you need 1.5 to 2 inches of hair taken from your head or body. Hair tests can be examined for substances like drugs, alcohol/ETG, or tailored hair testing alternatives.

Recently, hair follicle drug tests are more frequently utilized in the screening process. Various employers, courts, and substance abuse professionals prefer hair testing over urine tests. For organizations with strict zero-tolerance policies, courts, and individuals on probation, hair follicle testing is ideal. The main advantage is its extended detection window—up to 90 days—and it’s nearly impossible to tamper with, though urine tests remain effective for recent substance use detection within the last 5 days.

What it is, How it works

The utilization of hair testing has emerged as a significant method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a comprehensive timeline of alcohol and various drugs by embedding biomarkers in the fibers of the developing hair strand. When hair is collected near the scalp, it offers an approximate 3-month detection period for alcohol and drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, somewhat resistant to tampering, and easy to transport.

A 1.5-inch sample of roughly 200 hair strands (about the diameter of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, the preferred amount for testing and verification. For EtG, additional tests, and/or screenings beyond 10 panels, a 150mg sample is advisable. It's best to measure the specimen using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is not available, a similar quantity of body hair can be used. When mentioning head hair, we refer only to scalp hair. Body hair denotes all other types (facial, underarm, etc.).

Process Overview

The key phases involved in laboratory processing of a drug test result are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial process of a sample’s entry into a laboratory system. This process includes verifying that the sample was correctly sealed and shipped, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any supplementary data entry absent in an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is an initial swift evaluation for drugs of abuse. While Screening is an economical means for excluding drug use in most samples, a positive result must be confirmed for legal admissibility. Any samples with presumptive positive results in Screening necessitate further confirmation.

If a specimen appears presumptively positive during the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the original sample and prepped for the Extraction phase. This phase involves extracting drugs from hair at significantly lower concentrations than other methodologies (e.g., urine or oral fluid), thus making hair drug screening the most intricate methodology.

Confirmation of any positive screening outcome is executed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples suspected of being positive are washed before confirmation as required. The complete laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is audited following both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair guidelines and accreditation under ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests that have a shorter detection span.
  • Challenging to bypass: Cheating on a hair drug test is quite challenging, thus enhancing result accuracy.
  • Supplies historical insight: Enables observation of a drug usage trend over an interval, extending beyond recent use.

Limitations:

  • Cannot identify recent use: Drugs become detectable in hair approximately 5-7 days post-use.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests tend to be costlier than other testing methods.
  • Result discrepancies: Variables like hair color and personal differences in hair growth may impact drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Despite the common term "hair follicle tests", the test itself focuses on analyzing the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
