Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments in Wells, Wisconsin. Whether you require a drug or alcohol hair test, our expertise is in hair analysis with facilities accessible nationwide to conduct these tests. Typically, hair measuring 1.5 to 2 inches from the scalp or body is used. These tests can identify drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be tailored for unique testing options.

In recent times, hair follicle testing has gained popularity for drug assessments. More employers, courts, and substance abuse experts favor this method over traditional urine tests. Organizations with drug-free policies, judicial systems, and probationary conditions prefer hair testing due to its extended detection window, which spans up to 90 days, is gathered under observation, and is nearly impervious to tampering. However, for detecting recent drug use within the past 5 days, urine tests still hold the edge in accuracy.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is recognized as an effective method for detecting drug and alcohol use. Hair serves as a long-term record for alcohol and drug use by capturing biomarkers within the strands of growing hair. When sourced near the scalp, hair can offer a detection span of up to three months for alcohol and drugs. It is easy to collect, relatively tamper-resistant, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment of roughly 200 hair strands (comparable to the width of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, which is the optimal sample for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or panels beyond 10, a 150mg sample is advisable. It's suggested to use a jeweler’s scale for determining the specimen's weight. If scalp hair isn't accessible, a similar quantity of body hair may be used. When referring to head hair, it specifically means scalp hair; body hair includes all other types (such as facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The four primary stages in processing a drug test result in a lab include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the initial integration of a sample into the lab's system, ensuring proper sealing and shipment, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and handling any additional data input absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening acts as a preliminary check for drug abuse. While Screening is a cost-effective approach to eliminate drug use in most samples, a positive screening result must be confirmed for it to be legally acceptable. Any samples showing a presumptive positive in Screening demand further confirmation.

Should a sample test presumptively positive during the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the original sample for Extraction. This phase involves removing drugs from hair at lower concentrations compared to other methods (like urine or oral fluid), which is why hair drug testing is considered more challenging.

GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS are employed for Confirmation of any positive screening results. All samples with presumptive positives are washed prior to confirmation as necessary. The complete laboratory procedure from Accessioning through to Confirmation is carried out in accordance with both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 standards accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug usage up to 90 days, unlike urine tests that offer shorter detection periods.
  • Hard to deceive: It is exceedingly difficult to manipulate a hair drug test, ensuring greater result accuracy.
  • Historical insight: Offers a pattern of substance use over time rather than just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Cannot identify recent usage: Drugs become detectable in hair approximately 5-7 days after usage.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests tend to be pricier than other methods.
  • Result variability: Influences like hair color and personal hair growth differences can impact drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Although commonly named "hair follicle tests", the analysis focuses on the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
