In West Bloomfield, Wisconsin, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug screening. Specializing in hair testing for drugs and alcohol, our nationwide centers are available to perform tests, needing 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body. These tests analyze not just drugs, but alcohol/ETG and others tailored to needs.

Recently, the trend has shifted more towards hair follicle drug tests for screening. Employers, courts, and Substance Abuse experts require hair tests instead of urine samples. Hair tests benefit those with zero-tolerance policies, courts, and probationers, offering a detection period of up to 90 days and a monitored process that's hard to tamper with. Nonetheless, for the most recent 5 days, urine tests remain optimal.

What it is, How it works

Hair assessments are now recognized as an effective means for identifying drug and alcohol intake. Hair encapsulates a prolonged history of substance use by embedding biomarkers into the fibers of the hair that is continuously growing. When extracted from near the scalp, hair can reveal up to approximately a 3-month timeframe for alcohol and drug detection. It's easy to collect, somewhat hard to tamper, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment comprising about 200 strands of hair (around the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is the preferred sample size for screening and evaluation. For EtG, add-ons, or tests exceeding 10 panels, a quantity of 150mg of the hair sample is advisable. It's suggested to measure the sample using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair cannot be provided, a similar quantity of body hair can be gathered. In terms of head hair, this refers solely to scalp hair. Body hair includes all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The four core stages in processing a laboratory drug test result are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning includes the initial handling of a sample into a lab's system. This entails confirming that the sample was appropriately sealed and dispatched, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any extra data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody procedure.

Screening comprises an initial rapid inspection for drugs of abuse. While Screening is an economical approach to rule out drug usage in most samples, a screen that results in a positive needs confirmation to be legally viable. Any samples that test presumptive positive during Screening require further confirmation.

Should a sample appear presumptive positive at the Screening stage, more hair is derived from the initial sample for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at a significantly lower concentration compared to other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), explaining why hair drug testing is the most complex method to conduct.

Confirmation of any positive screen outcome is done using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples undergo washing prior to confirmation as necessary. The full laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is reviewed under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair recognition and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Benefits of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection range: Hair drug tests can trace drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests with a shorter detection timeframe.
  • Hard to falsify: Cheating a hair drug test is quite challenging, enhancing the accuracy of results.
  • Yields historical insights: Offers a pattern of drug consumption over time, rather than just immediate use.

Constraints:

  • Inability to sense recent consumption: Approximately 5-7 days are needed for drugs to be evident in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are typically pricier than other drug testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Elements such as hair color and individual hair growth differences may impact drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Although frequently termed as "hair follicle tests", the test examines the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
