Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments in West Sweden, Wisconsin. Whether you require tests for drugs or alcohol, our expertise lies in hair testing, with facilities available nationwide in every city to conduct such tests. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your head or body is necessary for testing. These tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be tailored for other specific hair analysis options.

Hair follicle drug testing has become increasingly common in recent years over traditional methods. Various employers, court systems, and substance abuse specialists now prefer hair drug screening over urine tests. Utilized in workplaces with strict no-drug policies, within judicial systems, and for probationary individuals, hair tests offer extended drug detection periods of up to 90 days, with observed sample collection, minimizing the chance of tampering. However, for detecting drug use within the last five days, urine testing remains the most accurate.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is increasingly recognized as an effective method for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. Hair strands capture biomarkers within the fiber as they grow, offering an extended history of substance use. When hair is taken from the scalp area, it can reveal up to a three-month history of alcohol and drug intake. Hair sample collection is straightforward, hard to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A 1.5-inch sample comprising about 200 hair strands (similar in thickness to a #2 pencil) near the scalp is necessary to obtain 100mg of hair, which is optimal for screening and confirmatory testing. For EtG, additional tests, or panels beyond 10, 150mg of the sample is advisable. We advise using a jeweler’s scale for accurate measurement of the specimen. If scalp hair cannot be obtained, a comparable quantity of body hair can be used. When we mention head hair, it exclusively refers to scalp hair, while body hair encompasses other types, such as facial and axillary hair.

Process Overview

The laboratory procedure for processing a drug test result comprises four key steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial step of incorporating a sample into the lab's system, verifying that it is sealed and transported correctly, assigning it a Laboratory Accessioning Number (LAN) at random, and completing any extra data entry that is not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening consists of a preliminary assessment for drugs of abuse. While this method offers a cost-efficient way to negate drug usage in most samples, a positive screening result requires confirmation for it to be valid in a legal context. Any samples that are likely positive during screening necessitate further confirmation.

If a sample is preliminarily positive in the Screening phase, more hair is extracted from the initial sample for the Extraction stage. During this phase, drugs are isolated from hair at much lower concentrations than in other testing methods (such as urine or oral fluid), making hair drug testing the most challenging method to execute.

Confirmation of a positive screen result is conducted using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All potential positive samples undergo washing before confirmation, if necessary. The comprehensive lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is examined in accordance with both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection: Hair tests identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests with shorter detection times.
  • Tamper-proof results: The difficulty of tampering with hair samples enhances result accuracy.
  • Usage history: Hair tests offer a pattern of drug use over time, not just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Recent usage not detected: Drugs take approximately 5-7 days to become traceable in hair.
  • Costliness: Hair drug tests tend to be pricier compared to other testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and personal variations in hair growth can influence drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Although commonly termed "hair follicle tests", the analysis involves the hair strand, not the scalp-located hair follicle.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing in West Sweden, WI
Hair follicle testing offers several advantages over traditional urine tests. With its longer detection window of up to 90 days, hair testing gives a more comprehensive view of an individual's substance use history. This superior timeline makes it particularly beneficial for employers and institutions looking to enforce more effective drug-free environments.

Unlike urine tests, which can be influenced by short-term abstinence, hair follicle tests maintain accuracy by providing an extended detection window. This characteristic is crucial for evaluating candidates or employees 'zero-tolerance policy compliance, giving the assurance of reliability.
