Providing comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments, Accredited Drug Testing excels in Westboro, Wisconsin. Should you require a hair-based test, whether for drugs or alcohol, our expertise lies in hair analyses, with facilities available across all U.S. cities equipped to conduct these tests. Typically, a hair length of 1.5 to 2 inches is essential, although body hair is often acceptable. Hair analyses can include drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other bespoke testing options.

In the past few years, drug testing methods have increasingly leaned towards hair follicle analyses. Employers, judicial authorities, and substance abuse specialists often opt for hair drug tests over standard urine tests. Hair follicle assessments are popular among employers with strict drug policies, legal entities, and probationary subjects. These tests offer extended drug detection potential—up to 90 days—conducted under observation, making deception nearly impossible. Notably, urine tests remain the benchmark for identifying recent drug use within the initial 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has emerged as a robust method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a prolonged history of alcohol and other drugs by locking in biomarkers within the fibers of the growing hair. When taken near the scalp, hair can reveal up to roughly a 3-month detection period for alcohol and other drugs. Hair is straightforward to gather, relatively hard to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment of about 200 hairs (approximately the size of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp will provide 100mg of hair, the optimal sample for analysis and verification. For EtG, add-ons, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the specimen is advised. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale to weigh the specimen. If scalp hair is unavailable, an equal quantity of body hair may be used. When mentioning head hair, we refer solely to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The lab processing of a drug test result involves four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the initial setup of a sample within a laboratory’s system. This involves ensuring that the sample was sealed and dispatched correctly, allocating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any additional data input not provided by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening involves a preliminary rapid assessment for drugs of abuse. Although Screening is a budget-friendly method to eliminate drug usage on most samples, a positive screen must be confirmed to be permissible in court. Samples that test presumptively positive in Screening do necessitate further confirmation.

If a sample appears presumptively positive during the Screening stage, additional hair is extracted from the initial specimen and prepared for Extraction. During this phase, drugs are derived from hair at a notably lower concentration compared to other techniques (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which is why hair drug screening is the most challenging technique to perform.

Confirmation of any positive screening result is conducted using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples are cleansed prior to confirmation if necessary. The complete lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is assessed under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, contrasted with urine tests which have a shorter detection period.
  • Challenging to falsify: It is quite difficult to cheat a hair drug test, ensuring more accurate results.
  • Offers historical data: It can reveal a pattern of drug use over a duration, not just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Unable to detect recent use: It requires around 5-7 days for drugs to be identifiable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically cost more than other drug testing methods.
  • Result variations: Elements like hair color and individual differences in hair growth can influence the concentration of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: Although often termed "hair follicle tests", the analysis is performed on the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
